Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Amen to "work with the documentation"

Suppose you are not familiar with the online documentation and want information on Alpha functions and methods dealing with "previous".

Search for "previous"? - you don't have enought time to go through all hits on "previous".

Search for "previous()"? Only reference is page 35 which mentions "xbasic fetch_previous() method" (in addition to the action script action).

Search for "fetch_previous()" as just mentioned? - no hits there, other than page 35.

Maybe there are some parameters to enter so just search for "fetch_previous("? - same single hit.

Try again with just "previous("? - now we get the previous function from page 436 - Field_Value = Previous(FieldNameString)

If you want to find the xbasic method, you have to get to it by paging through the "fetch_" methods or luck onto it, because the method is fetch_prev() - not fetch_previous() as indicated on page 35. So if you know what the method is you can find an explanation, otherwise have fun exploring.

    There can be only one.

Yeah, but the really important question is how many nubs??
Ira, I assume you have the answer for this!

        RE: Newbee Help

Part of the problem in many schools today is that the students want all the information delivered to them on a silver (golden?) platter, without doing the groundwork.

I have to disagree on this a bit. My wife is a teacher and, based on her comments, I would have to say that all too often the problem is that "the parents want all the information delivered to their children..." It seems to me that most (not all, just most) kids that refuse to work have parents that support them in that attitude. These parents will argue that the teacher is not doing their job properly and do everything in their power to get the teacher or administration to give the student a better grade. The fact that they haven't earned it means nothing. Unfortunately, too many administrators can't stand up to the pressure. (Unfortunately for some administrators, my wife can stand up to the pressure.)

          Russ,

Surprisingly, I do. Those with children in the 5 to 12 years of age range may be able to come close to the answer.

Or, take a magic marker, and start counting them!

After a few dozen close posts, maybe I'll post who the closest winner is!

            Stan,

I know you should have a copy of my Help file. Search on 'previous' and you will find six hits: .fetch_prev(), .find_prev(), .locate_prev(), .prev(), "tbl>.fetch_loc_prev(), and PREVIOUS.

              Cal,

I applaud your wife for being in such a noble (and many times thankless) profession as a teacher.

I'm sure she would agree that one of the most important things we can all learn is how to learn. If we can do that, then the rest will hopefully follow.

However, clients are free to be ignorant and ask as many stupid questions as they want, since they are paying for the priviledge! Now if they would just listen to sound advice when given to them......:?)

A demolition team supervisor, interviewing a prospective member, nervously asked "How did you do on your final exams at demolition school?"

"Well", replied the recruit, "after they curved the grades, I did quite well."

Re kids and parents wanting the answers on a silver platter I can only say AMEN. The big problem (and it's growing) is that kids and parents don't care what they learn. They just want a good grade.

                      Hey

We got way off the track here, but I was married to a school teacher for 24 years. That was hard!

It is NOT the question that is asked but how it is handled by the instructor.

By the way, the biggest single reason for students qualifying for special ed services these days is not one you'll find listed on the official paperwork. It's Motivational Disorder.

I have no bone to pick with those students who legitimately need special ed services -- only those who could easily succeed if they made a reasonable effort but who refuse to do so.
