Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    losing data from fields while updating

    Dear All,

    I have one table in a database, and every time when I want to update a field the date of that field, along with other fields, disappear and followed by the illigal operation message
    Code:
    module A2ENGINE.DLL op0167:0060a626.
    Registers:
    EAX=00000000 CS=0167 EIP=0060a626 EFLGS=00010246
    EBX=02054000 SS=016f ESP=01bc95a0 EBP=01bc99cc
    ECX=00000000 DS=016f ESI=00000000 FS=43af
    EDX=00623244 ES=016f EDI=02053393 GS=4496
    Bytes in CS:EIP:
    0f be 03 50 ff 15 c8 64 70 00 83 c4 04 89 45 e4
    Stackdump:
    01bc9df4 01bc99e8 00bbe350 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000
    Then if I restart Alpha 5 I got that message 'no network licence'. For over 12 years I am using the DOS versions of Alpha and have build complicated forms and sets, but never the DOS versions got down. Is this a shorcomming of Windows 98-II or just a bug in Alpha5?

    Any suggestion would be greately appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

    David Meesters

    RE: losing data from fields while updating

    David,
    A couple starting points. In the past I've had two similar situations.
    The first time I tracked it back to conflicting field rules. Go through all the field rules for each field and then all the form actions to make sure your form is not being asked to do something that the field rules will not allow.
    The second time I suspect I just had a corrupt table or form. Try duplicating the form first and if that does not fix it, try creating a new table.
    I'm not sure this will help but one of these suggestions may fix the problem.
    Jeff

      RE: losing data from fields while updating

      David,

      In addition to Jeff's suggestions, I find it useful to work with the troubled table using the 'default form' supplied by Alpha Five. (Control Panel; then Tables/Sets; then right click on the table's icon and pick open default form)

      If data entry occurs cleanly using the default form that is a good indicator the trouble probably lies within your form.

      On the other hand, if the problem reoccurs even while using the default form, that often signals that the trouble is in your field rules for the table.
