Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

go to page in report preview

Does version 4.5 put back in the ability to go to a specific page during report previews? This was taken out a year or two ago. If it's not there or not going to be put into version 5, then I'm not going to upgrade. May sound silly but it's important to me and I really have no good reason to upgrade. Need some inducement.

Bob, I don't recall seeing that in the feature set for vers. 4.5.

And, yes, a decision to forego the benefits of upgrading to 4.5 and 5.0 because of the possible lack of a 'go to page' function in the report preview does sound silly to me.

This was a feature in A5V1 which I loved too. If you have to preview reports containing hundreds of pages, it is a huge time-saver.

I'd love to see it back in V5 but most people never knew the feature was there in the first place.

RE: go to page in report preview

        Finian,

Was the 'go to page' keyed to the page number?

I ask because it seems that for most folks the page number is irrelevant, it's the information on the page that's important in most apps, right?

Why not run a query for the desired info and then preview a filtered report showing just the desired information?

Sorry to be so dense but I must be missing something here...

the "goto page" report preview feature is in v5.
in addition,in v5 you can export any report into pdf format, so that you can then open it with Acrobat reader, and search for any textor
print any single page. you can also print a single page
in v5, but the report preview won't allow you to search for
          text.

              Tom:

Yes, it was keyed to the preview page. There a was a box into which you typed the page number and the preview moved along to that page. The current alternative is to click the page forward arrow X times to get to page X.

Sometimes you just want to see what is on a particular page ... maybe you've got a weird calculated field in the report that may only appear 3 times in 100 pages, this was a quick and easy way to do that.

Ok, I can see that. Still don't think I would refuse to upgrade if this functionality were left out. While my face isn't too happy with my nose, it's not mad enough to cut it off.

I've done without it since V1 so getting it back in V5 is a bonus.

RE: go to page in report preview

Very good. When creating reports, one doesn't know if things like field lengths are sufficient and it may not be possible to tell from looking at just one page. In long reports, it's ridiculous to have to go forward one page at a time when you know that the most likely place for a problem is on page 84 of 200. I have some long reports and find this feature extremely useful. I've been using Alpha since 1990 and this feature was always there until someone either intentionally or inadvertantly removed it. it's been a sore spot ever since. Understand that a lot of us use alpha primarily for the same old thing. I don't need to do much programming or create applications or fancy forms at home. Since it seems that most upgrade features are for those who are serious users, it doesn't do much for me. I am interested in the fact that the new version is supposed to be faster. Since the report preview feature has been put back in, I will upgrade. Hopefully, there will be other new features that I can take advantage of. Alpha is far better than ACCESS, dBase and any other database program I have used.

                      Bob,

I hope my earlier posts in this thread did not signal indifference to 'sore spots'. It's the little things that drive me crazy, too. To illustrate the point (so to speak) someone once told me that you can sit on a mountaintop, but you can't sit on a tack!
