Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    templates and folders

This may be old to some, but it's new to me...
I have researched the messages under a search for "templates", but cannot seem to find the answer to my problem...
When I ask for templates, the slate is clean -- nothing there.

I seem to have a double set of folders.. with most everything duplicated...

Went in to the registry and made sure that the path pointed exactly to where the templates are..... at least as far as I can tell.

    Still no luck.....

As it stands now, I'm not sure that the 4.5 upgrade even took; since I cannot tell.... according to the registry I have 4.0 and 4.01 but no 4.5.....?????

Hope someone can help, I'm having a ton of trouble just trying to learn A5 in general.....

I have my A5 set up under D:Program FilesAlpha5V4 and there is a complete set of pgms there (A5Doc, Samples, Books, Templates, etc) but then there is another Alpha5V4 under the first one (right two folders with the same name) and there are complete copies of everything there also..
It is under this second one that I have been trying to build tables, sets and databases....

Whew !!!!!!! what a mess... Any and all help would really be appreciated.......

    thanx

    RE: templates and folders

    Richard,

Here's what I would do. Delete all versions of A5! Hopefully, you've saved your work in a folder other than the program or A5 folder. If not, do so.

Then, reinstall A5 and be sure to install the namuals, etc. The folder you install to is up to you but I like to have my program or A5 files in a folder all to A5. I don't use Program Files, etc. I just like it cleaner and at the top of the pile, so to speak.

When you get that far, see what you have. When I have a mess, Im almost always start over. Life is so much easier.

Don't be bashfull about asking for help, even if you think it's a trivial. Almost every question is a help to someone else. If you goof up, remember this, I, as well as most everyone, have done my share of boners. No big deal!

      THANX KENN

That's exactly what I did.. well almost anyway
I renamed the folder and started over with another
This time I used the "A5V4" name that the install disk seems to like, but it's still under Progra~1.... then I lost the zipcode file and that took 4 hours to get back...
don't ask how I finally had to do it. Suffice to say that the decryption password (et al) did not want to work....

Seems that I have found all the templates and now all that is left is to reclaim the seven or eight databases, tables, etc that are setting in the renamed folder..

      thanx again
      Dick
