Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: spread sheets

    Hello Kim,

There are seveal different types of calculated fields in Alpha. If you have a physical field defined in the structure of a table and in the field rules have defined this field as a calculated field, then the value of this type of calculated field does physically reside in the table and should export as any other field does. If however, you have defined a 'virtual' calculated field, it does not 'physically' exist and is created from the defined expression whenever called upon to do so. This type of field I don't think will export like physical fields.

    Good luck,

    Jim

      RE: spread sheets

      Kim,

Attached is small example, one table, one record, calculated fields in table, calculated fields in named browse. View calculated fields for the table by selecting the table (in Alpha control panel), right click, select "Edit field rules". Export operation defined to export all data to c:\dumptest.xls.

Export operation exports calculated fields from table as well as "real" fields. It will not export calculated fields designed for a browse as these do not exist until the browse is opened.

While "default" browse, or named browse, is open, you can select records by click-dragging in the area to the left of a record, ctrl-c to copy, then paste into an open spreadsheet. All fields are pasted.

Using Excel, Open, (all files), I can select the .dbf file, and I see all fields in the table, including calculated fields.

Is any of these things what you are attempting to do?

Can you zip up and attach a sample of your problem table for us to examine?

                    RE: spread sheets

                    Ok, I got it.

Nothing has triggered your calculated field to calculate.

When you define a calculated field, Alpha does nothing until

                    1. You make a new entry
                    2. You make a change to an existing record
                    3. Tell Alpha to re-evaluate all field rules.

To accomplish #3, go to "Edit field rules" as you did before, Select the "Rules" menu in the top menubar, bottom choice is "Re-evaluate all rules". Answer yes to "Mark invalid Records".

Then you'll have your field populated as you want.

                      RE: spread sheets

                      P.S.

You could see the calculated field in the browse because it was defined for the browse and the calculation took place at the time the browse was opened.

You can now remove the calculated field column from the browse, remove the calculated field from the definitions, add the "real" table calculated field to the browse, and see the same info.

                      Same for the form.

You might want to consider shortening your table names. Alpha can only use the first ten characters to differentiate between tables, etc. Anything after the space after "watershed" is extraneous and might lead you to believe you could name a second table "watershed anything you like". Alpha would not be able to tell this table from your current table.

                      Good luck.
