Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Append help / filter

I have a table in which two of the fields are a reference no. and the second field is the count of the use of that refno.
    example
    ref no. use no.
    10001 1
    10001 2
    10002 1
    10003 1
    10004 1
    10004 2
    10004 3
I would like to append the records to another table but only one ref no. of the record with the highest use no. I E from the list above the selection would be
    10001 2
    10002 1
    10003 1
    10004 3
how can I filter these records fo an append operation.
    TIA

    RE: Append help / filter

You probably want to use an intermediate table.

Among other things you could copy all records to another table, ordered first ascending by reference no., then descending by use no..

Now run a delete operation to delete duplicate records, duplicate reference no.'s. Now pack (just good practice, not really necessary because the records are "invisible"). The result should be one record per reference no. with the highest use no.

Now append from this table to the target table.
    There can be only one.

Along Stan's idea, you could order them ascending on both fields and do a summary operation grouping by ref_no, and using the "last" option for all other fields.

You might also be able to create a query where:
      use_no = lookupc("L",ref_no,"use_no","filename","indexname")
The index would be on the ref_no only and the assumption would be that use_no = 1 always created first use_no = 2 always created second etc. This is untried and untested.

I am still having problems, even when via a script I set a invert index & then run delete dups it always deletes in an ascending order.
        Any Clue?

Any chance of zipping up a sample which displays the problem. Sometimes it's much easier to solve the problem and send it back fixed (hopefully) than describe the fix.

                Terry,

Couldn't remember what the end result you wanted whild I was working on it so... ignore the last comments in the readme.

I created a copy operation to copy records form aggregate to another table in policyno order, descending by sch_no. Then I created a delete duplicate records operation which deletes duplicate policyno's. You now have a file consisting of each policy no with the numerically highest sch_no.

If my approach is correct, these are the records you want to append to the final table.

Thanks for all your help, what i have deduced is that to delete dups it will only do so in record number order delting the newer records (perhaps if Selwyn or tech read this they may add a change)
I have now got a solution, thanks again stan.
