Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    how to activate()?

    I have a form for entering QC data. In the body of the form, the inspectors enter dimensions which I compare to limits. On the form, I have a button (which works) named "CANCEL" which cancels all the changes and returns focus to the starting point.
    The button runs the script:

    parentform.cancel()
    parentform:serialno.activate()

    Now, I want to give the inspector the chance to do this in response to an error message, so I set up a script in the onchange event to compare to the limits and, if it is out of spec, shows a radio box of optional actions. One of those actions is the exact same script as above, but in this case, it returns the original values but won't relocate the cursor...it stays in the field.

    If I reverse the order, the cursor moves to the serialno field, then returns to the data field.

    How can I get this to move from inside the script?

    Try this after your last line:

    parentform.resynch()

      Bill,
      thanks, but that doesn't work. Any other ideas?

        Which on change event?

        I am wondering if this might be an addressing issue. In the case of the button, the meaning of "parentform" is clear. What about the case of the event.

        I would start by including absolute addressing in the code. If this works, I would then look for the appropriate relative address.

        I have eased the pain of such issues by creating a shared pointer variable for the current form. That way, all form objects and events can use the same code.

          RE: how to activate()?

          William,
          I have a field on the form called OD1 for the first OD measurement. It is directly on the form...no tabs or conditional objects.
          In the ONCHANGE event for field OD1 I have a script that compares the value to the upper and lower limits for that measurement.

          If it is too large or too small, I throw up (actually that's what I'll do if I can't figure this out) a ui radio box with several choices like "accept anyway", "reenter the value", and the troublesome one, "cancel this entry".

          The absolute addressing has the same result: the cursor is stuck in the field. I want it to go back to the first entry position.

            Where are these upper and lower limits stored. In variables? If so where declared? What is the exact code makes the comparison.

            What version of A5 are you in? If 4.5.266 have you a 4.03.230 machine on which to run it just to test? No inuindo here, just curiousity.

            Perhaps it is time to post the form.

            I sympathize; this is the sort of thing to drive one nuts.

              Pat:

              Just in case you haven't tried it, put a
              parentform:serialno.refresh()
              after the activate and see if it makes a difference.

                Thanks to all...I got it working, but I still don't know why.

                After I database compacted a few times, the cursor started moving to the field after the starting field. So now, I use a sys_send_keys("{+tab}") to move it back one, and voila!

                I'm thinking that the cancel command was actually changing the value in my field back to the original, and since I was working in the on change event, it was firing twice!!??!!
