Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    disbaled column in browse

Can anyone suggest a way to disable s particular
column in the browse within a form

ie: the id field is to be "disabled" at all times

    Ken Tjia

    RE: disbaled column in browse

go to control panel, then find the browse, open in design, click on column at top and open properties, select setup and mark box for read only!

      RE: disbaled column in browse

i am familiar with :read-only" for the entire browse

but what I want is a permanent "disable" on all the
records in row(s) for a specific column only

      ken tjia

        RE: disbaled column in browse

Right click on the column and select properties, format there is a box marked read only. That should work. I haven't tried it but it seems logical. I may try it myself in my main application.

          RE: disbaled column in browse

I just checked this out and it works like a charm.

              RE: disbaled column in browse

I do not get it...just try it..
I am once again familiar with the property being read only.
I want it to be "disable" even the mouse got to jump over it

              can it be done ?

One field of the browse only !

              ken Tjia

                RE: disbaled column in browse

Ken, if you never want the user's cursor to be able to land in this field, you could set the skip property of the data entry field rule for this field to be .t.

However, this would not be limited to the one browse you are working with now. It will affect this field wherever it appears, including other forms you may create.

                  RE: disbaled column in browse

Tom is right about the skip but if you use a function that checks the tables mode
you can acheive what you want.
                  You need the following :-
a function to check the mode
a button to allow changes on any forms that use the table.
I have put a bit of code to automatically force Alpha to think it is in change mode for you.
And a uder defined browse on the table.
' Put this script on a change button to force change mode
' change the field name (USER_NAME) below
' and the form name (pcheck) below to the field
' and form names you want skipped
                  dim tmp as C
                  function get_mode as N()
' create this function anf then put
                  ' get_mode=0
' in the skip event of the field you wish to skip if only browsing
                  end function
That way you can prevent the field being accessed while browsing and also edit the data when required
NOTE you will have to define a named browse as the default browse simpley does not show the skipped field
