Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Lookup Filter

    Hi folks,
I have a form with about 8 tabs all with seperate browses on which each use seperate tables but all lookup from one table source to fill each table.
The lookup and posting all works fine (finally after a week of restructuring anyway) except that when I click onto a piece of the lookup that has no data showing it brings in a record that should be filtered.
It seems to be always the first record in the source table.
How come this is still accessible as the filter should not allow this and why just this record?
As always any ideas on why and how to stop it would be much appreciated

    Mike

What are you using to filter the lookups and how is the value set? What build and version are you using? I have a similar situation where I use different filters on a table lookup depending on what is calling the lookup. I use a table variable for the filter and use the CanArrive event for the field object that uses the lookup to set the variable value. You can also use the CanArrive event for a browse. One of the problems with a lookup is the order in which events occur. The lookup comes up after the CanArrive and before the OnArrive if the lookup is set to pop up automatically. This can lead the unexpected behavior.

      RE: Lookup Filter

      Mike,
I have seen several situations where Alpha behaves a little strangely when a filter produces zero records. I have seen this, not in lookups, but in form initializations where zero records satisfy the filter. It will occasionally show a record that should be filtered. My guess is that what you are seeing may not be 100% consistent either. I think that doing a parent.resynch() or object refresh() at the right time fixed my situation. The similarity here is zero records, and Alpha just doesn't seem to like that,

        RE: Lookup Filter

        Hi guys,

Thanks for reply, jerry unfortunately parent.resynch() causes many problems with current record issues for my app so I tend to shy away from it.

Ok the app is on A5 V4.5 Build 266 and will be used on V4.5 rutime Build 266.

The browses each have a seperate table with same fields (named same but table path different).
All the data is held in a single seperate table, each browse looksup via field rule lookup with filter on data table
        i.e. FBS_DEPT="BEDROOMS"
and are all on closest match with all on pop-up (1st tab goes to dummy button to stop 1st browse popup to keep form tidy when opened)

The field for the lookup is the description field with the filtering on the department field.

A5 generated its own long list of indexes for the data table
with 2 for each browse table
        i.e.
        1. Name-fbs_dept3 Order-fbs_dept Filter-fbs_dept="bedrooms"
        2. Name-fbs_desc4 Order-fbs_desc Filter-fbs_dept="bedrooms"
        All ascending and inc all.

the primary index is set on just fbs_dept no filter (but somtimes moves)

Hope this explains it a bit better.

          Mike,
No answer here. One thing you might look at if you haven't already, is Steve Dentler's submission in the Code Archive titled, I think, advanced data entry. He has some examples of custome lookups that deny entry with a message if the lookup will return zero records. It's more work, but you can get the exact results and it's much better looking.
