Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Ira or anyone- Print Time Data Integrity

First thanks to all who tried to help with our SLOW processing

Ira - you mentioned that 'Make sure all reports do not lock the tables unless absolutely necessary.'

Should all of our reports (under properties) have the box checked that says 'Don't lock tables' -- they don't - some do - some don't ---

When would that be left blank? Before I go in and change them all I want to be sure it won't effect something else.

    Thanks
    Terri

    Terri,

The general rule is never lock tables, ANYTIME, ANYHOW!

That said, there are times (including reports) where you should or must lock tables.

    E.g Packing tables, Rebuilding Indexes

A report needs to be locked when it is required to make multiple passes through the table for calculations that summarize items. E.g. to compute percentages, you need to know the total 1st, or need to figure out how many pages total (for displaying Page x of y) it has, or to compute whether a record goes on the current page or the next (widows and orphans), columns etc.

Let's say you don't lock the table. You preprocess the total of some number. Then as you process each record's value, you divide by that total times 100 to get the percentage. If some record that is part of the total is changed, or a new record is added, the actual total might change, but the total number that A5 computed will not change. It's possible you could have percentages totaling more or less than 100%

If you lock the table, no changes can be committed and no new entries saved until all passes through the tables are done. This will hold up all other processes that change or enter records for the entire time the report is running. For this case, I rather copy all needed records to a private copy, and then run the report from this private copy without bothering any other user.

Basically, if you use Running versions (like Running_Total()) as opposed to the regular versions (like Total()) are used, it will compute the summary value as each detail is processed. Using the Non-Running version forces a preprocess pass through the data to get the summary value. If the numbers don't need to exactly match up to the next pass for creating the report, then they don't need to be locked, but some values might be slightly off.

As you might surmize, the running versions are much faster, and should always be used unless you must have the summary prior to when all the records are processed for the printing pass.
