Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Question on file name

When I click on file and get the recent file list I find the following.

    Database (1) for filename.adb

Where did this entry come from and how is it different from

    Database for filename.adb

    Thanks,
    Ed

    RE: Question on file name

Ed, what you describe suggests that someone is opening a database table, instead of opening the database itself. When the table is opened by clicking on the DBF file, Alpha Five will create a new database (ADB file) for you. Since one already exists in your folder, Alpha Five politely begins numbering them... If you repeat the process you'll get Database (2) for filename.adb I would expect.

In Alpha Five DBF's are tables. The tables are 'added' to a Database. The Database file has an ADB extension. The correct way to open the Database is to click on the ADB file, not one of its tables.

      RE: Question on file name

      Thanks Tom,

I suspected this was the answer. when the new database ADB is created does it still use all the previous tabels or does it also create new copies of them as well. I want to make sure any updates made to the database ended up in the correct table. I'd like to clean up the the mess by deleting all but the original ADB.

I also noticed a large number of MPX files. I believe these are created by queries. Could I delete these without any problems.

      Thanks,
      Ed

        RE: Question on file name

Unfortunately, it all depends on when and where you made the updates to 'the database'. If you thought you were working with the original, but were really working with a copy (renamed with a numeric suffix) those changes that affect the entire database will be lost if you delete the copy of the ADB. I suggest you work through each ADB, one at a time. Look for changes that you want to keep. Copy and paste them into the correct (original) ADB, before deleting the copies.

As for the MPX's they are temporary files. If no one else is using them on your network, you can delete them. There's even a setting (View / Settings / Queries) that you can adjust in the Alpha Five control panel, so that Alpha Five will, itself, delete these when it exits back to the operating system. I use this all the time, and prefer to have Alpha Five do the cleanup for me.

          RE: Question on file name

Tom's response is correct but here's a little more detail that may help you...

If you open a TABLE by clicking on the DBF file it creates an ADB with only that table. (Personally, I never use this option and think it would have been better for Alpha to leave it out.) The user can add additional tables if desired. IF these are exactly the same tables as in the original app (i.e., the FULL path name is the same) then any changes to that table will apply to any database (ADB) that uses that table. (Click the Tables/Sets tab then "Code/View/Details" on the menu to see the full path.)

The things that WILL stay with the table are: structure changes, field rules (in the *.dd* files), indexes (in the .cdx file), memo fields (in the .fpt file), forms, browses, reports, labels, letters, and saved operations (all in the *.dd* files). Any scripts that are stored in these layouts or the buttons on the layouts will also stay with the table.

HOWEVER, global scripts, including toolbar and menu scripts, (i.e., anything seen in the control panel's Code tab) are saved in the ADB file so any changes to these scripts will only apply to the local ADB. They can be copied and pasted to the "original" ADB if necessary. Also, each ADB file has it's own list of tables and sets so make sure that any new tables/sets that have been added (and you still want) are added to the original ADB.
