Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Report with part numbers only

I have a database file that has 350 part numbers in it. I would like to print out a report with just part numbers only, this can be done in report writer with now problems, but the report has each part number on a separate line. I need to have more than one part number on each line, there is room for 5 different part numbers on each line, in other words, after each record is read, put that into a array and then read the next record, after 5 records are read the print out the line. Can anybody show how this can be done? Thanks for any help you can give me. I use 4.5.

    Gerald,
You might try making a 5 column report.

In the detail section of the report check out the properties - you can have multiple columns. Make sure all objects in the detail section are on the left side of the page, and within the rightmost edge of the column. If you are spread out you may only get two columns (or none) where by moving objects closer you can get three or more.

You can have columns balanced in height, also, so you get some white space at the bottom of the page, or not, and you get white space at the right, bottom.

If you have grouping in the report you can start the columns there, and it passes down to the detail section (if you have one).

I have done that with columns, but all columns have the same part number across the page, the part numbers only change when it prints a new line, and with that I end up with 27 pages. In my old database that I use to use, this was done by reading a file and puting the part number in a five part array, when the array was filled I would then just send it to the printer, then clear the array and read the next record, those days age gone forever.

          Gerald,

Yes, I agree. There are times I miss the line oriented printing routines we used to use. However, all is not lost.

Take a look at the attached example. It shows two approaches, one using newspaper style columnar layout, and the other displaying records horizontally on each line.

Unzip the attachment to a separate folder. Do not mix it with your development work.

I've tried to make it self-explanatory. Let me know if you have questions.

Probably the easiest way would be to use a LABEL layout instead of a REPORT. Just specify the 'fake' label layout to 5 columns (with appropriate sizes) and print it on regular paper.

Thanks for helping me, the labels worked OK, but there should be a way to do it as a report. Again many thanks.

Gerald, did you check the two report examples I posted?

Do you know of any other database report engine which can do what you seek, without rearranging the source records?

This morning I unzipped your file, and looked at the reports for twenty minutes before it dawned on my how you did these reports, 10 minutes after that I had my report done. It was so easy the way you did it, many thanks and I regret that it took me so long to evaluate your suggestion. Many thanks again. Gerald Greb

No problem. I'm glad it was useful. While I was writing the code I realized that the second approach I illustrated basically uses a second table to contain formatted lines of text, each in it's own record. The report is then based on that table to produce the format you desired. It's an approach that might have wider general applications for others, so it was worth doing. I'm glad it made sense!
