Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Number To Char

    Hello All,

Apologies as I have asked a similar question to this before Msg ID:26941.

Again I would like to convert a numeric value to a character value. Is it possible to have a user type in a numeric value say - 120 and then use a function (similar to STR I guess) to have that value populate a character field with "One Hundred AND Twenty".
Is this possible with a function ?? Or is it only achievable with a script? (or a UDF?) If so any general advice with the script most welcome.

    Thanks in advance.

    CheersTom

    RE: Number To Char

    HI, Tom,

That would be a fun script to write. My only thought would be to convert it to a character foeld, then test each place from right to left and create the appropriate words for each position. It would be a large script, but not terribly difficult.

Do you need to store the information in word format, or are ou trying to print a report or letter for this?

    Tom

      Hello Tom,

I trying to produce a report that can be used to print out cheques for a payrun, so the character value does not have to be stored.
Could I convert using a claculated field on the report ??

      Many Thanks

Have you checked out the format styles for numeric fields either in reports or forms? I would think this would work.

                  RE: Number To Char

                  Tom,

It's already built-in to the STR() function as a 4th, undocumented (in ver 5 it is documented) parameter

                  The syntax is

                  STR(numbervalue,width_of_display_field,number_of_decimals,options)

                  An example might be

                  STR(123.45,250,2,"XBW")

Options are the same as those in the format property of a field on a form concatonated together as needed.
                  X - display words
                  B - blank if zero
                  W - capitalize each word
$ - type dollars at end of number
                  * - left pad with asterisks to width of display
                  L - lowercase all words
                  C - Capitalize all letters
                  F - Capitalize 1st word only

Another alternative is to use the Transform() function

                      I tried str(123.45,255,2,"XBW") and got

                              here is a sample application.
it actually calculates peoples ages but I added down in the lower left corner of the customer screen 2 fields to do what you wanted.
type the number in the top field (lower left corner)and then save the record
the bottom field then displays the number as text.
I use this to print checks in a payroll program.
                              Both are numeric fields
the second one just displays as text
                              display,right click on field, properties,format
look at the bottom for the display types. (the drop down scrool bar has more than what you initially see)
                              hope it helps
