Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Stack overflow

I've re-installed AlphaFive ver 4.50 (evaluation copy) a couple of times, now, and am continuing to get a Windows "Program error - stack overflow" message when I (for example):

    1. Create a new database
    2. Create a table, in the database
    3. Try to create a second table.

The error message comes after selecting New, then Table in the wizard. Same message when just randomly opening tables in the invoice samples.

The size of my downloaded appraisal file, a5trialalph.exe, was 14,366KB. Is that what it should be?

I'm running it on an oldish Dell, Pentium II-266, with 224 mbytes of RAM, with Windows 95, which is incredibly reliable usually and everything else runs really well, out-performing other, newer, nominally-faster machines.

I'm really keen to try Alpha, as it looks perfect for what I want to do, but I can't risk it if it's at all unstable as I need it for many remote sites.

    Any help gratefully received!

(Tom Holt - I thought I'd give you a break and save you posting this message! Thanks for anything else, though.)

    RE: Stack overflow

    Martin,

after the first table is created, save it.

Then go to the Alpha Five Control Panel. Select the Tables and Sets tab. Right click anywhere in the white space of the tab page and select option to create the second table (New).

I recommend you save each table before beginning to define the next one.

      RE: Stack overflow

Martin, I'm sorry I can't offer any advice to help you but I can tell you this...

You have a comparatively up-to-date computer. My employer has seen fit to leave me with an old IBM Thinkpad with a Pentium processor (at 133Mz?). Yes, that's a Pentium, not a PII. It has 64 meg of RAM (it took a major fight to upgrade from 32) and is running Win95. A5v1 and A5v4.5 are both running on it with no problems - even with Lotus Notes running all the time, Netscape quite often, and Word/Excel and even (ugh!) Access opened on occasion.

        RE: Stack overflow

        Hello Martin,

I had a stack overflow problem on two systems a years or two ago (one did it every time I tried to create a table, sound familiar?)and it turned out to be another piece of software running in the background, specifically some mouse enhancement software that came with one computer and a TSR I had used for years on the other. I use a freeware program called startcop. It is a neat little utility that will show you all the software that is running on your system (there'll be more than you think going on behind the scenes). Startcop allows you to easily disable (and re-enable) these software 'services'. You might check this out and see if this might be your problem. A word of warning however, don't disable anything that is necessary to the sucessful boot up of your system!

        Good luck,
        Jim

          Thanks Tom,

I really thought you had it there! But I'm afraid saving doesn't help either. I created, yesterday, a database called mytest.adb with two tables, accounts and timesheets. These were saved (the computer's been switched off) but I've this morning opened the database and clicked on timesheets and - there's the stack overflow again.

So, back to the drawing board.

          Thanks, anyway,

          Martin.
PS At least I'm getting to "meet" lots of new people!

            Thanks Jim,

I tried renaming config.sys and autoexec.bat (so they don't load anything at start up), disabling virus software, email, just about everything. I've even tried running in Safe Mode (hardly a long-term solution) and, every time, as soon as I click on create new Table, then Start from Scratch, there's the Stack Overflow error, and I'm thrown out.

Oh, well. It was a nice idea. Thanks to everyone who tried to help. I'd better find a copy of PC Mag, and see what else is about...

            Thanks again,

            Martin.

              RE: Stack overflow

              Martin,

              Before you give up on Alpha, I would try some of the following items;

              1. Change your default printer driver to some other printer like HP II
              2. Change the resolution and color depth of your video screen
              3. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del and remove as many background running tasks (leave Systray and Explorer) as possible before running A5
              4. Make sure you have sufficient free hard disk space
              5. Within Alpha 5, make sure that the settings for the private and shared directories are not blank. Setting them to the A5 program directory (typically c:Program FilesA5v4) would be a good start
              6. Run Msconfig from the Start, Run menu, and disable all of the other startup programs not covered by config.sys and autoexec.bat (which is most windows stuff)
              7. Update all drivers you are using to current ones.
              8. Consider reloading Windows over your old installation. This clears out many bugs that are created by programs overwriting newer drivers with older ones.

                Thanks Ira,

I suppose I should. If it IS one of those things (I've tried the "within Alpha" suggestions) I'm just surprised that absolutely no other programs or applications are having problems on the same PC. As I'd be responsible for ensuring the smooth running of any application developed with Alpha, I'd hate to have this trouble on a regular basis.

Thanks for your interest, though. I think I might try installing Alpha on another PC first, which may narrow things down a bit.

                I'll let you know!

                Best wishes,

                Martin.

                  Martin,

One reason people are writing you about this is that it is so odd. I have installed the program on many different machines on our network and never had this happen.

                    Bill,

It's obviously a problem with Alpha.

How could it possibly be a defective evaluation copy, something on/in his machine interfering with a full installation, his machine itself, other software, driver conflicts, dll conflicts, or anything but how unreliable Alpha is?

I wonder why all the rest of us put up with it?
                    There can be only one.

                      FWIW
Different manufacturers, processors, motherboards, chip sets, graphics boards or built in graphics, different sound boards or built in sound, network cards, etc, etc, etc. Yet we expect (or at least hope) each of the infinite combinations of software and hardware will work perfectly together and never a problem. I'm amazed any computer works at all.

                        Getting philosophical now!

Actually, I have just been in touch with Tom Holt and told him that I HAVE managed to install Alpha5 on another machine and it seems (fingers crossed) ok. The main difference between the machines is that the recent one runs under Win 98, and the original was Win 95. Not sure what to do, now. The Win 95 machine has more memory, although a nominally slower processor. It (the Win 95) runs loads of other applications, plus email, internet, all successfully (and simultaneously), although of course I've tried running Alpha with nothing in background.

So it's the specific PC, but what I do now I've no idea (I've tried jiggling about with config.sys, autoexec.bat and system.ini - they're remarkably similar on both machines). I FEEL like throwing it in the bin after spending most of two days pratting about with it, but I know I must be so near to resolving it.

                        I'll keep you all posted.

                        Martin.

Anyone know what A5halt.exe does, and why it is taking up RAM in my "rogue" PC after I've been crashed out of AlphaFive?

                            Martin,

A5halt is a utility which allows you to abort code which has stalled or gone into an endless loop.

On the OS question, Alpha5 runs fine on W95, 98, 2000, ME, NT, etc. I have personal experience on all of these except NT. So look elsewhere on the rogue for the problem.
