Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

      RE: Stack overflow

Martin, if you're still with us, I would recommend doing basically what Ira suggested.

      1. Change the printer driver
goto msconfig and turn off any programs loaded by HP
      2. set the "new" printer as the default.
      3. in msconfig, turn off everything!
      4. goto to the A5V4 folder and select all - and be sure all are not "read only"
      5. goto settings in the control panel and be sure the directory settings are correct - possibly c:|programs|A5V4
      6. be sure you have space left on the drive
      7. Reboot

if the problem still persists, I would bet on the video card being bad.

        RE: Stack overflow

        Martin,

Thanks; tried all that, but still have the problem. I have over a gigabyte of space on the particular drive. I also have very up-to-date virus software and various Utility progs for analysing, well, everything; RAM, register, disk, etc. and it doesn't report any problems. How much would you bet on the video card being bad? Everything else runs perfectly. I can have two graphics programs, a spreadsheet, DOS application, HTML editor, MS-Word, Outlook Express, three or four launches of Internet Explorer, all running at once quite happily (and fast). Why is Alpha so sensitive? The work I'm planning would mean intalling the software in many departments, all with differently-configured PCs, of various ages; I need something that's not too fussy about what it's running on.

        Thanks for your thoughts.

Oh, I don't know if this helps:

I get the error when I click the Finish button with "create a new table from scratch" checked. I DON'T get the error if I have "Use a pre-defined table template" checked.

I also get the error if I double-click on a table in the Control Panel.

        Best wishes,

        Martin.

Well phooie - would hate to lose a new developer. Have you called Alpha - I'm almost sure installation support is free. There could be something corrupted from your download. Have you tried re-downloading it. I am in the same situation you are in. One of my clients runs my app on 9 computers, [full version(4.5-266)]; and another client runs it on 6 computers [runtime(4.03)]. While I have had and have heard of people having inssues with old video cards when pushing Alpha to the limits with certain forms and certain graphic uses, I have never heard of your problem. So far I have had to replace one video card.

            Martin,

The old video card mention reminded me of one other item that often causes problem that he could try.

Going to the Settings, Control Panel, System, Performance tab, Graphics and then set the Hardware acceleration down a notch or two. This fixes a lot of graphic related problems with old video cards.

              Martin,

Are you willing to turn off the math co-processor and see what happens? This used to solve a few of these types of problems. Problem is some other software may depend on the co-processor but at least it would give us more to talk about.

                Thanks Jim,

Not really. I would if I had an existing application that I was desparate to run, but I'm only trying to appraise a demo version. It's a pity, because the more I look at the system documentation, the more I feel this could be what I need. When's version 5 coming out? Can I get a beta version just to test?

                Regards,

                Martin.

                  Hello Martin,

                  >>When's version 5 coming out? Can I get a beta version just to test?

It's a guessing game as to when v5 will be released. If I were forced to guess, I'd say before the year is out. You could send an email to Alpha and ask to be on their beta testing list.

Let me get on the pulpit here, hang in there with Alpha. Their are some issues, heaven knows I've ran into a few, but I don't think there's a tool out there that will let you develop powerful desktop database solutions in a short time frame like Alpha will. There are products that are as easy to use (some will say easier), but in my opinion, none that will give you the ease of use along with the tremendous power that Alpha does, especially with the new scripting gene that is included in v5. Takes you way beyond v4's action scripting.

                  Jim

Maybe someone has suggested this, but get a new copy of Alpha5V4.5 from Alpha.
You might also check to see if buffers and stacks are set high enough in your Config.sys file. If they are not there add them. Buffers = 50
                      Stacks = 250

                        Thanks James,

I've tried the buffers and stacks settings (yes, and re-booted!) and - no change.

I have, several times, tried re-installing A5 from the same download file, but I don't think there's anything actually wrong with the download file itself, because it installed and runs ok on another computer (actually, a laptop). Both computers are set up in faily standard (and similar) ways, the CONFIG and AUTOEXECs are alost identical. The laptop actually has about a quarter of the RAM of the PC. They both have the same virus software running, etc. (Laptop is Win 98, though, PC is Win 95).

The only thing I'm not sure of is what's set up in the Registry. I guess something stays there when one Uninstalls, because it still knows how many days I've got left of my appraisal period. If Alpha trust me to buy this system eventually, berhaps they, or someone, could let me know how to remove absolutely every trace of it, so that I can re-install from absolute scratch.

                        Yours, still baffled,

                        Martin.

"remove absolutely every trace of it"

Use regedit and search for "Alpha Software", "Alpha Five". and "A5"
                          There can be only one.

                            Stan,

I ran the AlphaFive uninstall, then deleted entries from the registry, then reinstalled.

                            Same problem.

However, I got the message saying "13 days left to test AlphaFive" so it's kept something somewhere. Being an honest sort of chap I've never tried to find out where this is stored, but it mist mean that some vestage of the system is still in my PC.

Anyway, I don't know where you are, but it's 6.10 pm here on Saturday evening, so I'm not going to worry about it any more.

                            Thanks for trying.

                            Martin.
PS I think, at 28 entries on this problem, I may be in danger of holding some sort of record, and I haven't even bought the product yet!

I would suggest you buy the product and get a fresh installation disk. Then if it does't work you can call Tech Support at Alpha. I had a problem some time ago that we could not solve (can't remember just what) and they sent me a new disk, and that fixed the problem. They give a certain number of days free to correct an installation problem.
Alpha, from my view, is a great database program. I hope you are able to solve the dilemma.
