Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Trouble holding Xbasic program

    I typed the following xbasic program in a voter database program and it will not stay.

    tbl=table.current(1)
    tbl.change_begin()
    tbl.chgdte=Date()
    tbl.change_end(.T.)

    I just want to change a "Chgdte" field when I make any change in the record form. I have a separate field called ADDDTE which I calculate through the record event. Have I entered it wrong or is the prpogram wrong. Can anyone help. I bought the new Xbasic manual, but I guess its too much for me.
    I thought I was setting it up correctly. Help will be appreciated.

    Where exactly did you type this? Did you make a new script from the code page of the control panel? Did you put it on an forms event, such oninit, or on activate? I am puzzled how it could dissappear as scripts are simply text that gets interpreted. More info, please...

      Why not go to field rules and make "Chgdte" a calculated field. Then put "date()" (less the "") in the calculation area. This should accomplish what you want.

        Hi Stephen

        Thanks for the reply. I went to the design of my database called Checklist and in the field chgdte I went to code editor and wrote those events in the xbasic language and then selected on change. I made a change in a record and nothing happened. I went back to the design of form and viewes the code. It was not there. I am sure I am doing something wrong as I learn.

          Hi Dan

          Thanks for the response. I'll try what you suggested. I don't clearly understand the formula. I am trying to just have the date change if I change any data in any field on the form without affecting the adddate file when I add a new person.

            Nip, I don't fully understand the context in which your script will run, but if the form or table is already in change mode when the script is run it will fail. You can't put a table in change mode if it's already in change mode. In similar cases I've used the tbl.mode_get() function to good purpose.

              Hi Tom

              Thanks for the reply. I am not set in change mode when I wrote the steps. The field "chgdte" is in user entry now, and I was trying to write an exbasic code to automatically change the date if I made a change in any other field like Party, Voted, etc. After I went out of the code editor, and tried it, nothing happened. and when I went back to check the code editor it was gone. I am very new to this and I am anovice trying to experiment after buying the manual. Am I missing some basic input requirements when I am entering the code?

              Thanks for any help.

                RE: Trouble holding Xbasic program

                The steps are:

                Enter the form in design mode
                Select the field to which you want to attach code
                Richt click and select actions
                You will be presented with the code editor
                ---You are not ready to enter code at this point---
                You can now do one of two things to prepare to enter code
                The easiest is to select the Code menu in the top menubar and choose "convert to xbasic", the other is to select the "Action Script" item, right click to "insert command" and choose "Inline Xbasic".
                Write your code, close the code editor, save your form, and now the code is saved.

                I don't believe Tom was speaking of being in change or enter mode "when you edit/add the code". You need to be aware of the possible modes the form might be in "when the code is executed".
                There can be only one.

                  RE: Trouble holding Xbasic program

                  P.S. Regarding actions associated with a form, as a precaution make sure you save script changes in the code editor of a form before you return to design mode. I think just saving the form before you exit doesn't save actions associated with the form that you may have changed.

                    Nip -
                    A couple of possibilities

                    1. You are clicking the save icon on the code editor (Won't do anything, and no one explains this...) and NOT clicking to save the form when you return to the form editor (CRUCIAL)

                    2.You are saving the code to a different action through writing the code, THEN selecting the event to hang it on - you have to select the event first. In this case the code should be saved, but to a wrong event. When selcting that event the event shows as Bold

                      Stephen,

                      I'm a doubleclicker myself. I click to save the code script, and I click again to save the form. Seems a bit redundant, but there it is...

                      ps. "Doubleclickers Unite!"

                        If I understand you correctly my suggestion will work. Unzip this and see if this does what you want.
