Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Duplicating Record across a set

I have just started learning Alpha 5 and I was wondering if anyone could help me out with this problem I have come across.
The problem I have is that I am trying to copy an existing record in a set, once copied, then I am trying to add it to the set with a new unique identifier, as a new record. Therefore I am trying to duplicate a record in a set across all child tables.
Any help towards it would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

RE: Duplicating Record across a set

If you search the board for "Duplicate code fails in 4.5.266" (Put it in quotes) you will find a thread that may be helpfull. A number of questions will need to be addressed. Do you need to create just a new duplicate parent with the same set link values? In that case, all you need to do is duplicate the parent and then make any changes needed. The existing child records will be linked to the new parent. On the other hand, if the values in the linking fields also change, you will have to find and duplicate each relevant child record, use xbasic to change the value in the linking field, and then duplicate the parent and do the same. The new parent will now have new child records attached.

RE: Duplicating Record across a set

I was the one that started that thread so you can well imagine that I've walked my way around that particular problem several times.

I will only add that the new edition of Peter Wayne's Xbasic book gives two methods for duplicating compound records (linked records within a set)and that the thread demonstrates that *one* of them fails in Version 4.5.266 although it works properly in 4.03.230 and Version 5 beta. Understand this and use the method which works in all versions, at least for the time being. I rewrote some code and things seem stable in 4.5 for now.

So review the thread and the book and you will find a solution. I'm on the road for 3-4 days and can't receive private email but I would be glad reply to anything you send when I get home.

      Or write back here.

RE: Duplicating Record across a set

-Start by consulting the thread just below (15 Sept) called "copying record in a set." There is a link to an article and to a another previous thread. Read both.

-Tell us what version of Alpha 5 you are using.

-I'll be back where I have access to my materials tomorrow or wednesday so if you need more actual code let us know and I or someone else will supply it.

But the links I mention will probably give you what you need.

RE: Duplicating Record across a set

I managed to get it working with help from my supervisor. Thanks for your help it was much appreciated. I copied my current record from the current table to a new record in that table. Then also copied all fields in the other child tables, but giving it a new unique identiier, which linked all tables together and therefore created the new record. Do not worry if this sounds a bit confusing to you because the main thing is it works, but something i can't explain how. Cheer.
I have another problem, which i hope you can assist me with, if thats ok? It is on the Topic Lists, headed as- "assigning value from a calculation to radio button". And on there i am trying to get an input date from the user and one from the system ie the current date. Then i calculate the difference in years. From that it should fall into a certain category, ie 1-3 years etc...The calculation works. Now i have radio buttons, and without the user clicking on the appropriate one, i want the system to click on it to show that it is calculated from the system and the number of years are selected.
            Thank you

RE: Duplicating Record across a set

              Ilish,

You have a good supervisor. The code to which we have been sending you does exactly the same thing, but all in one operation rather than manually first for the parent record and then for each of the (potentially large number) of child records.

              As for your new problem.
              1-it is best to post new problems to a separate thread so they are properly labelled and people can seek them out;
2-you write that you have a button which makes a calculation and "...without the user clicking on the appropriate one, i want the system to click on it to show that it is calculated from the system and the number of years are selected." But you do not say (and perhaps have not explicitly decided) *when* you wish to have this calculation executed. Once you have done so you will have to attach code to that event which will either push the button or run the calculation directly.

              So more details are required.

RE: Duplicating Record across a set

                Hi
That radio button problem is sorted now, because sometimes i need to spend more and more time on it to solve it, because i put the code on the OnInit part and also put a button in to save chanes, which has the code in to update the system, so now it has worked. But i would like to thank you for your help.
                Cheers
                Ilesh
