Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    1 App Affecting another

    Hi,
I am well confused now, I have a very large app which I am still building in 1 folder which 1 of the tables is called Company.dbf I also have another app in a totally seperate folder not even similarly named which also has a Company.dbf table. When i last worked with the large app I deleted Company.dbf as it was now obselete then closed down A5 and reopened to work with the other one but found that the Company.dbf in this one had linked itself with the large app and because it had been deleted also had dissappeared WHY??
At no time were they linked each was seperate the only thing that was the same was the name!

Anyone know whats going on - is it something I may of done if so what so I dont do it again.

    Thanks folks

It may have been that you added the existing file to your new database. That way the path to the file points to the other apps database, not the current one. If you then delete the file it actually deletes the file from teh source path.

If I am right and you did do this then let me jnow and i will tell you how to create a copy of it properly.

      Mike:

Did you create the file in the second folder with a copy command from Alpha. that would maintain the link.

I always copy files into a new folder using windows explorer and then add the table to the new application.

      I hope this helps.

        Thanks for the replies guys,

I do believe I used A5 copy table to create the new start of app but I am sure the path showed to all of the new tables in the app pointed towards the new folder.

It was only 2 tables joined to 1 set but a lot of scripts were involved.

I copied it with right click - copy then paste into new folder, I take it from your comments this is wrong - how do I go about it then??

        Thanks again guys.

The easiest way is to do what you did first, then duplicate that table and ensure the save path is the new/correct folder then with the original table use "DROP TABLE FROM DATABASE" do not delete it.

            Thanks again guys,

I think I will have to be more careful in future, what a silly and costly mistke to make, nevermind I will have to get my fingers tapping.
