Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A_CASE.DBF & A_GLOSS.DBF

I have an application called Pro Maintainer which is written in the latest build of Alpha 5, version 4.0 and have a client who just setup the app to run on a LAN. BTW, we have other clients running same app on a LAN. This client is running Windows 98 on the Work Station.

Here is what he wrote today.

The file names of ICON SHORTCUTS that are being put on the workstation desktop:

    A_Case.Cdx A_Gloss.Cdx
    A_Case.Dbf A_Gloss.Dbf
    A_Case.Ddd A_Gloss.Ddd
    A_Case.Ddm A_Gloss.Ddm
    A_Case.Ddx A_Gloss.Ddx

The target for the Pro Maintainer Work Station desktop shortcut is:

    Target "C:Pro Maintainer 2000 WorkstationRuntimeAlpha5.exe" -include
    "C:Pro Maintainer 2000 Workstationcommands2.txt"

Please note that this seems to happen everytime that the workstation Pro Mainainer icon is initialized from the workstation desktop.

    Andy:

I did the same thing with the same files showing up on the desktop. Here's what I DIDN'T do and it caused it.

Have your client right click the ADB file's Icon in Windows explorer and select 'Create Shortcut' - it will fiddle around and create one. Drag THAT new shortcut to the desktop. What he's doing, no doubt, is just dragging the ADB to the desktop. That'll get the A_CASE stuff everytime.

Let me know how you do.

      Andy:

Darn it, I hung up too soon.

After he does the shortcut trick, edit that startup file to include your ' -include=bla bla bla' statement.

      Ken again.

Ken is right. It is to do with an incorrect shortcut patch.

          RE: A_CASE.DBF & A_GLOSS.DBF

I don't think that is what happened.

Here are some more details for the Workstation:

          Commands2.txt reads

          "D:Pro Maintainer 2000ApplicationPro Maintainer 2000.adb"
          -icon="Maint.ico"
          -title="PRO MAINTAINER 2000 Workstation"
          -splash="c:Pro Maintainer 2000 WorkstationSplash2.bmp"

          ******

Where D mapped to the drive on the File Server. There is ONLY a runtime version of alpha 5 on the Workstation.

Target on the Workstation shortcut icon is per previous post

Start in on the Workstation shortcut icon is:
          "D:Pro Maintainer 2000application"

          ******

As they say back to the drawing board. Thanks for the suggestions.

BTW, I have this app running on Windows 95/98/NT 2000 (LAN) and it is working fine. This particular client has LINUX as o/s on the File Server but has setup a partition which I assumes emulates Windows. The app runs fine except for these icons popping up on the W/S desktop.
