Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Main Menu "delayed"

    When I start the application, my form "Main Menu" does not show up on the forms window until I click something else. There seems to be a delay somewhere. This affects my autoexec file since it attempts to show the main menu on startup and apparently can't find it immediately. Any ideas on what could cause this. None of my other applications do this.

    RE: Main Menu

    Howard,
    Are you using Windows 98 or ME? They seem to require the click in some circumstances.

    I have a lengthy autoexec which ends with the following:
    menupntr = obj(":MainMenu")
    if is_object(menupntr)
    menupntr.restore()
    else
    menupntr = :form.load("MainMenu")
    end if
    menupntr.show()
    menupntr:button2.activate()

    This seems to be pretty snappy.

    Are you doing anything else in your autoexec?
    Does the HaltScript appear?

      RE: Main Menu

      Here's something that might be related:

      I had an app in which the I loaded the Main Menu, and then displayed a prompt (ui_get_text) for the user's ID. Occasionally, the user would have to click somewhere to give the prompt focus.

      I solved the problem by using a trick by Cal Locklin. Here's the relevant part of the script:

      sys_send_keys("{esc}")
      ui_get_text("USER ID","Enter ID")

      Note the the ESC is BEFORE, not after, the prompt.

      I don't know if something like this would help you, but at least it could be useful if you use any prompts.

        RE: Main Menu

        When the script gets to menupntr = :form.load("Main Menu") I get an "object method error. A parameter may be incorrect or misspelled". I am using Windows ME and at this point I have no other lines in my autoexec script.

          RE: Main Menu

          I thought I might be on to something by using the ESC. When I put the esc line first in the script, when the program started the main menu icon showed in the control panel BUT the commands to show the main menu did not do anything. After several tries, the main menu icon no longer showed up until maybe 15 seconds of waiting (without clicking anything) Very strange.

            RE: Main Menu

            Howard, others have wondered if the A5halt.exe program is involved. Perhaps it's receiving focus at startup, instead of your opening form? You might try renaming it (temporarily) to see if that makes a difference.

              RE: Main Menu

              Tom, renaming a5halt.exe did not do a bit of good, BUT, I think I have a clue to the solution. I have been adding tables to my application and they were on a zip drive. I thought that they would automatically be transferred to the directory where my main application resides. I must have been mistaken because when I call up the application I see the light on the zip drive come on. It seems like my application may be "split" between the zip and the hard drives. Apparently it takes some extra time for the main menu to be read, because all I have to do is wait 15 or 20 seconds and the icon magically appears.
