Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    SirCam virus affecting queries!!! Help!

The SirCam virus was downloaded onto our office machine through an e-mail attachment, and before I could run any "fixes," my AlphaFive v4.0 queries stopped working. When I view my tables, the field names and data appear to be intact. But when I run any kind of operation (e.g. query and export), or when I try to design a new query operation, the software tells me that the field names for the table are "Old" and "New". The Query Genie does not display the field names that are actually in the table. When I browse the table, the field names look fine, and there are no field names "Old" and "New" in my tables.

Where are these field names coming from, and, more importantly, is there any way I can either fix this problem or get around it to get my table queries working against the proper field names? Note: the fixes I ran, Norton and McAfee, did not detect any problem with the AlphaFive files.

One other question -- I noticed a file extension of ".MUF" are being created. Is this a valid AlphaFive extension???

Thanks to anyone who can help!

    Oh, Oh....

I read an article in the September '01 issue of Computer World magazine about a comparison between Norton, McAfee and other Virus software. Norton & McAfee were not 100% effective. I don't recall the SirCam virus being mentioned as the testing was done last March. The Software that caught all virus' is Panda AntiVirus Platinim 6.23. The download version cost is $30 and can be reached through pcworld: find.pcworld.com/10147. Or do a search on Google for Panda AntiVirus Platinim 6.23.

    That said:

    1. Did you download the latest updates from Norton and McAfee?
    2. If you have both Norton and McAfee on your computer at the same time, there may be a conflict so I wonder if either worked as they should?
    3. How many apps do you have running with A5? If more than one, all all apps affected?
    4. Make a copy of database applications. Then do some experimentation with the copy. Go to the forms and click the fields properties. In the field type box delete the field and reselect it with the icon on the right side of the box.
    5. Did the virus affect any other software applications on the computer?
    6. Try uninstallihng A5 and the reinstalling A5 once you're sure the hard drive is free of any virus'

If renaming the fields doesn't work and you're sure no virus is on the hard drive, I would uninstall and reinstall A5. This will tell you if A5 is corrupted or if it's the application.

MUF = Multi User File, track how many logons to Alpha and enforces the license limit. A real P.I.T.A!

Thanks, Peter, I appreciate the information on what ".MUF" files are.

Thanks, Ken, for your great and well-thought-out suggestions. I am keeping your posting for reference. I ran a final virus scan Friday before leaving work, and in the process deleted two Windows system files that were infected with the virus. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to check AlphaFive after the deletes. When I checked AlphaFive this morning at work, the queries and other operations seemed to be working normally again. The virus did something to alter AlphaFive operations, but I may never know exactly what happened.
Thank you for your quick and thorough response.

McAfee was the only one that wiped out the virus for me. I now have a firewall downloaded from Tucows.

It sounds more like A5 is corrupted by the virus
