Can I open a form based on a field value?

Hello all... fairly new here, but not to Alpha.

Anyways, I have a table of work orders and a table of CMMs (Component Maintenance Manuals). For some CMM's I have created Test Data Sheets which I want to be able to fill out and print after completed. So far, no problem.

Using Xbasic, I have a button on the work order form to open the appropriate TDS form based on the TDS field in the CMM table. The form names are basically part numbers of various units. I was able to open a report using a field value, but can't seem to get it to work for forms. Here's what I have, which is only slightly modified from the REPORT version which worked:

What activity are you expecting to see when using:

layout_ptr = :Form.load(name)

the .load() method does not display the form, .view() will.

I just experimented with (in the interactive tab of the code editor

name = "SKU Information"

followed by

:form.view(name)

and my form was opened and displayed.

Also, since you are retrieving the name from a table field, you will need to trim the trailing spaces. I am assuming that all your form names are not exactly the same length as your field width.

:form.view(name) will not open a form if the form name is "SKU Information" and the field contains "SKU Information "

Try :form.view(rtrim(name)) or trim the spaces when passing the field value to "name".

BINGO... *slaps forehead* It was the stupid Trim.

I put in a UT() and it works like a charm! Thank you, thank you, thank you. And you're correct about the names... not only are they various lengths, but virtually random characters. The odd thing is that the Report worked without trimming.

It's always the 'little' things!
