Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A4V6 to A5V4

I'm in the process of trying to trans fer A4 files to A5 and having a few problems. The manual and help files sure don;t seem to address this concept...

how ever, my current question is:
Is there any way to automaticlay apply any formula used in the 'form' view to the 'browse' view? I have a number of them dealing with time and aircraft flies and times on components.

    Thanks

    Marty,

Not 100% sure what you mean. However, any code used on an object, including the form, an be copied and used in a browse with minor adjustments to reference the browse if you were referencing the form. Not all objects have the same events so there may be some limitations.

Hope this helps. If you are more specific, then a more specific answer can be given.

Find the page in the A5 help system on "Defining Calculated Fields for a Table or Set" and see if they will do what you want.

In other words, there's no one place to enter the formulas once and expect it to work for the field in both Browse and Form? A4 you could.

I think it says do it twice, once for Form and once for Browse, which is what I'm trying not to have to do. Entering a formula for a feild once should take care of it.

          Thanks

Well.....it does if the formula is entered in the table's field rules. Other wise, copy and paste. It has to do with windows vs dos, A5 is object oriented and as such each field is an object and stands alone. I believe it's a windows thing.

From the control panel, click on the table or set you're dealing with.

Click on the design button of the control panel which opens the field definition box.

In the toolbar, click on the button with the "xy" on it.

              Define your calculated field.

              Save your changes.

When in design mode for forms or reports, your calculated field should show up in the drag and drop list.

              Isn't this what you want?

                RE: A4V6 to A5V4

I don't know, really. I have set the calculations in every manner I can find to do and the ONLY way it stays after I shut down the program is in Form mode and in Field Rules. I have entered the calculations into Browse mode in more manner than I remember, save after each of the 4 formulas, and as long as I keep the program open, they appear when I high light the column and click on 'properties', but if I make a change in any Type in Field that should affect the product in a calculated field, nuffen happens. If I look at the Form mode, it has.

Shame when you convert A4 file to A5 some of these things don't go with the data file. We've got a lot of indexes, etc, I dread rebuilding.

Try the method I detailed above. I think you'll find it does what you want.

It is a shame that the conversion from A4 to A5 isn't easier, but you kind of have to view it as a change to a whole new piece of software that just happens to have many of the same features that are implemented in a different way. And if you've ever tried to replicate what you did with one piece of software with different software, you know it's never easy.

Well, I tried it. Again. And got the same results. No matter which methoed I use to get the formulas into those fields, saved and functioning, as soon as I close the data base and/or the program, and go back, what was entered, and saved, is gone. I have tried every method I can think of, or been suggested, held my mouth every way possible... I have NOT ran down the runway nude in the moon light but I doubt that will help either.... and they just disappear. For a moment I was thinking that maybe they were no bering saved to the server up-stairs but all modifications to Form mode, etc are there. As are any changes to Structure or any thing else changed, modified or set.

Humph.... only reason I'm here is Win2000 does not like DOS programs other wise we'd never have left A4.

                    Thanks,
                    Marty

Thier entered in the field rules... same results. They show up every where except in Properties for the field after I save, the shut down the data base and/or program, then reopen it. I have tried drag and drop to create a second field and left it there, or remove it. Either way, when the database is reopened one or both of the fields have no reference to the calculation. Before I close the file the Properties menue window shows "CALC->Field name" and after I reopen it shows "FILE NAME>Field name". It just is not there.
