Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Linking Mystery

In a simple 2 table, 1:many set with a single field link, I have some very strange behavior. As an example, the parent table has 8 records and the child table has 14 records, so some parent records have more than one child record.

The Problem: Building a simple form with an embedded browse for viewing the child records, as each parent record comes into view, so should the child records appear in the browse. Unfortunately, the child records for some of the parents do not appear when the parent record is in view.

I have: 1) checked the sets link; 2) verified that the linking field data matches in both tables; 3) checked for any filters; 4) checked to be sure the tables are within the same folder; 5) Created a new set and a form consisting of 2 fields from the parent table and an embedded browse for viewing the child records; 6) Ran QBT and QBF, entering an exact name and end up with no records found; 7) Ran a FBF, entering an exact name only to have a different name returned; Ran database compact and index updates; 8) Ran QBT for part of the name with the wildcard *, it returned a totally different name; 9) Made sure there was an index on the linking field in both tables.

What else might I try in order to get the matching child records to appear?

    Thanks,

    kenn

    Kenn,
Is this true if you open the default set-form as well?

      Peter,

Unfortunately, yes. If I do FBF using only a last name, the record is found but no matching child records. If I enter the entire name, No Record Found. Same for QBF.

      Thanks,

        RE: Linking Mystery

If I use QBF or FBF and search by the linking filed in the sets default form or my main form, it works superb. Seems the problem is in the name field.

IS it psooible for one field to be corrupted and if so what's the cure?

        Thanks,

Anything is possible. Can you post a sample?

Not sure. Posting is not the problem but the confidential data is. I'll see if I can change enough of it for a post.

              RE: Linking Mystery

              Peter,

I created a small database, entered some records and everything worked as smooth as could be.

Went back to my problem database and I finally discovered the problem. I have some names that are repeat offenders but the case number is different. When I did a name search, it found the first name and in 3 of the parent records, it's the 2nd case number for the name that has the linked child records.

I have a popup name search form that isn't working correctly. While I can find the name and click on it, if there is a name which appears more than once, even though the 2nd same name is highlighted, the 1st name is returned, hence the 1st case number and no match with the child records.

I believe the index on the popup is a name index so perhaps if I change it to the casenumber index, it will work properly.

              Uff'da

OK, I'm back on track. Peter, your suggestion to look at the default set form hadn't occurred to me, too many trees. Anyhow, when I tried the set form, it opened the door to thinking in another direction and hence the solution.

                Thanks for helping out.
