Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How can other apps access A5 data?

We are currently designing a voice response system and would like to access our A5 data from that application.

The application can read Ms Access data and index files but not Alpha5 data and indexes. We do NOT want to convert our data to Access and would prefer to utilize our data from within A5. The developper mentioned that Alpha5 must have an odbc interface (driver) they could use to access the data. Is that true? If yes, what are the limitations?

Pls note that contrary to most posts on this board we are not using A5 as front end to access other data types but would essentially need to read and write to A5 from within another application.

    Sincerely,
    Jack.

If your application supports ODBC try linking to your Alpha5 tables using the FoxPro 2.6 ODBC driver.... native
    to the Alpha5 database.

      Jack,

You also might want to search this board for this subject since it has come up from time to time. Try searching for Foxpro or Fox Pro, etc.

Which voice response software are you using to design your system? We use Parity Software which uses a Foxpro 2.6 type database like Alpha 5. You can read the file directly except it must be re-indexed since Parity uses their own indexing scheme.

RE: How can other apps access A5 data?

I am sorry if I did not explain myself properly and I repeat my question. Does Alpha5 have a NATIVE obdc driver provided by Alpha software or not. If obdc support is only provided via third party drivers we can't take the chance to develop an industrial type application that will support 50,000 simultaneous users with 500,000 calls per day and a couple of million read / write per day. It's simply to risky to try to find a third party driver and experiment with various approaches knowing that the developper of the database has no intentions to provide native OBDC suport right out of the box. Even if the Foxpro driver mentioned on this board, works, Alpha shouold provide a disk with the relevant drivers or and / or installation documentation and or limitations.

We are only starting the development process and don't HAVE to use alpha5. We just would like to use it since our current data is in Alpha5.

          Sincerely,
          Jack.

            jack:

does the software you want to use read xbase files. dbase III or dbase iv. then you would read the data correctly.

            i hope this helps.
