Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • File extensions disappearing in app

I know why the Good Lord allowed me a good nights rest lastnight...He knew I'd be facing these "opportunities"!

On the customers application, some of the file extensions are no longer there. I've identified that the .cdx, .ini, and .inf extensions are simply gone.

Could a virus OR a virus scanner or a spyware be doing this?

    Happened to anyone else?

    Thank you :)

"I've identified that the .cdx, .ini, and .inf extensions are simply gone." - What windows version, how did you verify...?

There is a setting in several versions to

"Hide extensions for known file types".

In xp, open explorer, look under "tools", "folder options", "View".....

      Hi Stan,
Thanks for that tip! I HOPE it is the solution. I will pass it on to my user (who is about 45 minutes away, drive time) and see if she can give it a whirl. I probably won't hear from her until tomorrow, though...

If anyone else has any suggestions, it'd be great to give her several things to try if Stan's idea isn't what's causing the extensions to disappear.

      Thank you all!

        Hi Wanda,

It must be Stan's approach to solve the missing extensions, otherwise it is a malicious co-worker deliberately removing them.

I have not run across a virus (or equivalent nasty app) that would just remove the extension.

But you have to admit the (nasty) possibility. A virus that looked for a "cluster" of same name files with different extensions and deleted the extensions. How would you differentiate the files to reassociate with the correct extensions?

The .dbf and the .cdx might be easy with foxpro compatible databases, not so the .ddm, .ddx, and .ddd.

RE: File extensions disappearing in app

            Good morning,
My customer found the checkbox that you mentioned, Stan, and restored the extensions. The application still is not working as it should. The buttons that go to different menus (forms) aren't all working, nor are the reports printing. The error message is "can't find form".

            Now what?

I'm going to step her through a total re-install (yes, Ken, putting all files in in a SAFEPLACE folder, first ;)

I have to look at all my notes, first though, to make sure her data isn't destroyed.

Got to run to another customer, but will jump back on this board when I return in a few hours.

I'll take all the suggestions I can get on this. Thank you!

RE: File extensions disappearing in app

Just wanted to bring this thread back up to the top. Not sure if I should start a new one, as apparently the missing file extensions were simply a checked bos in Windows Properties.

Why would an application, after sitting idle for a couple weeks, not behave properly?

Jr. Hackers? Viruses? Spyware? Anything that I need to check in the application, itself?

              Thank you all so much!
