Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Network Server Storage

Hi This is my first attempt at a database and I intend to run it on a Server at work. I gather that Alpha5 stores drive location information within the databse code and therefore the development drive should be configured to be/have the same URL address as that on the Server. OK sounds real sensible but I can't quite get my head around how to accomplish this on my PC at home. Can someone give a practical example of how to configure this on my Home PC. For the sake of arguement I will probably use Drive D: on the Server in a folder called Alpha5 Database - how do I configure this on my Home PC?

    RE: Network Server Storage

Not quite answering my own question and I have no doubt that this will prove to have a totally obvious answer, which I don't know! It does occur to me that as I will ultimately be deploying the finished application via a 10 user runtime it begs the additional question of just how would the application know in advance where it is to be deployed from?

      RE: Network Server Storage

      Peter,

A fundamental design decision is whether to keep the tables in the same folder as the database dictionary files. i.e. in the same folder as the ADB file for your database. This is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

If you do this on your home machine, all you must do is copy all the files from database folder to a SINGLE folder on your server. When the database is opened there it will run just fine reqardless of the drive letter assigned to the partition in which that folder is located.

Similarly, once you have it installed on the server, to update your copy at home just copy the files from the one folder on your server to the one folder at home.

It's a piece of cake. However, it will crumble into an unmanageable mess if you opt to store the tables in a different folder than the database dictionaries.

        RE: Network Server Storage

The only time that Alpha Five cares where you put files is when you put your files in multiple different directories. If you put the entire application in one folder, then it is completely transportable from one computer to another, and you can put it on your network without any problem. That is, you can develop the application in
        c:\fantastic_app
and move it all the files to
        \\bigserver\c\app_home

and as long as all the tables for the application are in the same folder, A5 won't care.

Many thanks for that - it was the PACE Training Manual Level 1 (page 65) that gave rise to the 'issue' it is less than clear on this aspect...
