I would like to add a field to a form that displays how many records were found in whatever query was just run and, if possible, which record the pointer is currently on. So, for example, If I was on 4 of 17 and pressed the next record button, the box would display 5 of 17, etc. (Note: the query.order will always be other than record number order)

I looked everywhere I knew in the documentation and on the forum and haven't been able to come up with any clues. Of course, that doesn't mean it isn't out there.

As usual, any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I don't know of an easy way to do this.

The total count of records in the query is easy. There's an xbasic function that will supply this number quickly. Getting the current position number in the query list is a different matter.

It could be done using scripts that fetch through the current query list populating an array. Version 5 has some new functions that may simplify this by building a CR-LF delimited string of search keys. In any event, once the array is populated the array element number could be used as a proxy for the each record's position in the query list. Your script would have to compare the current record to the array each time the record pointer moved. The array would have to be rebuilt each time a query was run. If this is not a mission critical feature, I'd skip it. It's apt to be messy and may even slow performance for the user.

Maybe somone else will have a better idea, but you opened the door to 'any suggestions', so ...

No, it's not mission critical, so at this point it looks like the benefit would not be worth the cost (effort). It would be a nice little doodad to have though, wouldn't it?

Hi Bob,

Check out run_count(). This is used for reports and is not supported for forms but it works on a form for what you want.

Thanks for the tip on using run_count() in forms. It's *almost* perfect. Do you know if there is any way to get around the end of file bug mentioned by several others on the forum (and observed by me).

I found a way around the bug! Use the table.current() function. My form is based on a set where I want to count display record numbers in the current query at the top parent level. Here is the calculated field I used. Auto_num is the auto number field in the top level table.

"Record " + iif(table.current(1).eof(),count(Auto_num),run_count(Auto_num)) + " of "+count(Auto_num)

On the off chance that I understand what you want, try the following - open the form in question in design mode and create the following two calc fields and one variable

calc field (Total_records), expression = reccount("your table name")
calc field (Current_Record), expression = reccount("your table name")
numeric variable - at the layout level (vFound)

I use the 'roledex' object (see the Customer table in Alphasports). Alpha generated the following code for the multi-state buttons, except for the one line I added (colored red).

What this lets me do is include, on top of the 'roledex', "Records = (the total record count)", "Found = (number of records found that start with the selected letter)" and, "On record = (current record)".
