Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

I'm very new to databases and alpha five, and just created my first simple table and form. My problem is that as I enter data into a field on the form, it disappears when moving to the next field. In the browse window, all the information is there - what is happening in the form?

    Thanks

    Seth

    RE: data entry

Both are "windows" for viewing the data in the underlying table. A browse allows you to view multiple records in something like a spreadsheet style. A form only displays one record at a time.

"as I enter data into a field on the form, it disappears when moving to the next field" - I think you mean it disappears when moving to the next record.
    There can be only one.

Thanks Stan. What I don't understand is why the data doesn't remain in the field as I complete the record - I assumed that the fields would blank - to be filled - when adding a new record, not within the same record. I hope this isn't too confusing.

        Seth,

do you get the same behavior when entering a new record using the 'default form' for the table? (You get to the default form by right clicking on the table in the Alpha Five control panel).

          Hi Seth,

As you will experience, this forum is very willing to help new Alpha users like you.
But to do so, we always need a clear explanation of the problem. Having to guess does not make it easy for us to offer a solution to your problems.
For instance, fields and records are not the same.
Of course you will know that, but your question gives the idea you don't. Do you get my picture ?

It might be best to upload your table with the form to our forum so we can see for ourselves and give you the advice you need. Stan is one of the more respected forum users, but there are several others that will always be there to help you. Just zip your table directly from Alpha Five, and upload it. It will include your form automatically.

          Kind regards,

          Marcel

              Seth

I don't know what is wrong with your form. It may have some corruption in it or you may be on an older version of Alpha.

Please check for updates. From the help menu - Check for new version - Check Internet for new version.

If it finds that there is a new version, then download it, save it, and then update your HOME version. Watch on the download page to be sure to get the latest HOME version. See attached image.

I was able to generate a default form with Blue Contrast and have it work as it should. My guess is that you need a version update.

              Pretty painless.

              Hope that helps.

Strange, it worked for me. Can you reset the style and have it work?

                        Al,

I reset to the blue contrast, and it still works. Strange, because the two times I recreated it as new, it wouldn't work until I removed and then reapplied the style.

                        Thanks for your help
