Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

worked in v4.5 but not in v5

I am slowly making the change from v4.5 to v5.

I have form based on a set. The parent records are in the top portion of the set and child records are in an embedded browse at the bottom.

In version 4.5, the records in the browse are filtered to match the global variable yearterm. When I open the form, the only child records I see match the variable yearterm.

When I copy the application to a new folder and open it using ver 5, the filter does not work and all child records are displayed.

When I first got ver 5, I seem to recall a similar problem with the application I was using at the time. I decided to continue with ver 4.5 until summer when I could examine the problem. I have since changed jobs and am working on another similar application.

I can't figure out why it works in one version and not the other.

Where do I need to look?

    Thanks

    Jim

Where and when is the variable initialized. Where is the filter.

      Jim,

Make sure the variable is in scope when the form's filter needs it.

Make sure the child table filter expression is present in the filter / order properties of the form. If the filter expression incorporates a calculated field change the expression to use only field values and functions, not calculated expressions.

The variable is initialize before the form is called and it is a global variable. The form is not loaded until the variable is set.

The filter is in the form. The field is called year term and the formular is yearterm=Var->yearterm

sorry about the two part answer.

The filter uses field values not calculated values. I assume by "in scope" you mean the variable has been set. The variable is set before the form load and it is a global variable. The filter has the expression in my reply to Bill Hanigsberg.

By the way, Tom. The form is built using the basic data entry rules that you had posted on the code archive. But I don't see how the modal/modeless data entry would be a problem.

I still don't see why it works in 4.5 but not is 5.

            Thanks for your replies

If it worked in 4.5 it should still work. Can you post something here.

                Jim,

You can try checking the table listed in the browse properties. Click on the child browse, setup tab, and make sure the child table name is shown.

I wish I could but it is fairly large and I'm not sure I can zip it down to 1 mb. I'll try to work on that tomorrow.

I have attached a shrunken version of the applcation. Start it up in ver 4.5 select the grades button and you will be prompted for a yearterm. Enter 2003-1 in the box and select enter grades by teacher. You will see in the browse that only records with 2003-1 in the year term box show up.

Now open the application in version 5 and so the same thing and you will see that all of the records show.

                    Thanks for looking at this

                    Regards
                    Jim

It doesn;t want to attach. I'll try later --Ihave to cover a class.

                            Jim,

I'm pretty sure the problem is with the scope and declaration of your year-term variable. It even does work *some* of the time in V5. I edited your grade entry form and then entered view mode and the filter worked.

This is one of those things which should not have worked in 4.5 but did. (I had a few of these myself-in retrospect they should never have worked.)

I could not find where your variable is declared as global but for sure it is not declared as global in your grade entry form so you should do that.

One method you could consider is declaring the variable in your autoexec and then in the oninit of each form.

BTW having blank spaces in your table and form names is asking for trouble.

Hope this is of some help.

Thanks for looking. I must have misunderstood the concept of global variable. I thought it only had to be declared at one point. In the dummy table, the yearterm variable is set to "0000-0" when the application begins. In the yearterm form it is set to the appropriate year by the operator.

At this time of night, I don;t want to play with it but I hope to work with it tomorrow.

                              Thanks
