Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Error opening startup form

    Hi Folks

I have a startup form named patients which I have selected as the starup form. When the form is loaded, it loads at the back of the control panel - when I use the option to hide the control panel in database properties - I get the message Error opening startup form "[email protected]". When I click OK on the error everything is fine - any suggestions welcome.

    Regards

    RE: Error opening startup form

    Hi Michael,

Today I completed a startup form for my application and I pass on how I completed this task with help from forum members.

    1. In control panel create a short cut to the desktop.

    2. On the desktop icon right click and go into properties.

    3. In the Target Field type in the following:

    "C:\Program Files\A5V5\alpha5.exe" "C:\Program Files\A5V5\xxx\yyy\yyy.adb"

xxx = the name of the folder that stores your database.
yyy = the name of your database.

When you click on the desktop icon it will then take you straight to your start up form.

      Michael,

The reasons for this may be hard to find, but one thing you can try is going the database properties and unclicking both the startup form and hide controlpanel options and save the database. Close and reopen the database and compact it. Close it and reopen again and select both options and see it that makes any difference. You may also want to close A5 and reopen or even reboot the computer. This may not fix the problem, but it won't hurt.

        Thanks lads for your help

I have tried all that you suggest already without success. Is it possible that a form within a set cannot be used as the "startup form" ?.

I have created a menu form in the database (outside the set) and accessed all other forms from this.

Never had this problem with ver 4.x

        Thanks again

          Michael

Using a form for a set shouldn't be a problem, unless there is a problem with the form itself. I have done this on a couple databases without a problem. Is there any code that runs when the form opens? Does the form rely on any variables that must be defined before the form opens?

One odd thought does come to mind. Try renaming the form to something other than the table name. While this shouldn't be a problem, it can't hurt to try. Also create a new form from the default form for the set and try using that as a startup form. It is possible there is some corruption in the form.

Actually, most users open a database with a menu based on a simple one field, one record table. This opens very fast and can be left open for almost any activity. This is the same idea you have used that worked.

            Michael,

Two cents worth from Louisiana - set up a dummy table called 'Menu' and design an opening menu (which really is a form). Set that as your startup form. Place buttons on it for whatever actions you want to
happen; 'Clients', 'Products', 'Utilities', 'Reports' etc. You can hide the control panel on startup, but you should provide a way to access it, or you will very possibly get in trouble if you need to access the CP while in the application.

This give a more professional look to you application and gives the uers options as to what he or she can access.

            Just a thought.
