Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Why is this rounding?

    Hi All,

OK, simple question I can't find the answer to.

I have a simple math calculation thats driving me nuts.

    Using the interactive window:
    ?20/25
    = 0.800000

    dim cn as n
    dim count as n
    count = 25
    cn = 20/count
    ?cn
    = 0.800000

    All is fine

But when its in my script cn calculates to 1
Why is it rounding?? How do I stop it?

    Thanks for the help

    Scott

    RE: Why is this rounding?

calculating to 1 or displaying as 1?

What are you doing with the result of your calculation that you see it displaying as 1? Is it possible that it's calculating correctly but is simply rounding for display purposes?

Where are you seeing it rounded?

If it is displayed on a form, etc, the display format could be set to no decimal places.
      There can be only one.

        RE: Why is this rounding?

Hi Scott, Un-wanted rounding is generally caused by not having set the # of decimal places for the field in the "table structure". There is also a decimal places setting in the fields properties so its easy to set that and think that you have what you need.

Check that fields decimal places definition in the tables structure and you should find your problem.

          RE: Why is this rounding?

          Paul and Stan,

I am seeing it in the trace window as the script runs using Trace.WriteLn(str(ci))

Its calculating as 1 and throwing off my code. I need it to specificly be .800000

          Thanks

          Scott

            RE: Why is this rounding?

            Marc,

Its in a script. It has nothing to do with displaying on a for or a field value .. I am using it for a calculation only.

I have a loop in the script and I have a IF THEN statement within the loop.

If I have 25 tables in the DB I want to perform something ONLY IF the value of ci is >= 1, 2, 3 ect.

So if ci = .80 then it waits for the next loop to fire when ci = 1.60 then it fires again when ci = 2.40 and so on.

            Hope thats clear

            Thanks

            Scott

              RE: Why is this rounding?

Check out the documentation for the str() function, you need to tell it how many decimal places you want. It defaults to none:

              ?str(.8)
              = " 1"

              ?str(.8,4,2)
              = "0.80"

                  Thanks Lenny,

I wasn't thinking ... I know its a number, but I had to convert it to show in the trace window.

                  Big DUHHHHHHHHHH for me ...

                  Sorry all

                    RE: Why is this rounding?

Actually Scott, if you're just converting it to a character for the trace window, you don't have to convert it at all. Use trace.writeln(""+ci)

By prepending the null character string "", the trace call now has the string data it requires and displays the number as needed. This is also a great shortcut for ui_msg_box and other functions that need a character when you have a number.
