Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Problem With Tabbed Object

    I have a tabbed object on a form. The tabbed object has several field objects on tab1. As I enter data the tab key or return key advances the cursor through these field objects according to the specified tab order. When I tab off the last field object on tab1, the tabbed object switches automatically to tab2. I want to prevent this from happening. What I really want is for the cursor to go back to the first field object on tab1 (circle back to the top of the tab order). I cant seem to figure out how to do this. I dont think I should do anything in the ondepart for the last field object because if I click on a button or another object (or even tab2, because now I really want it), It may interfere with that object getting focus.

    Also, thanks to all who have replied to some of the questions I have posted lately. I have learned a great deal because of all of those who took the time from their busy days to help someone who needed it. I am quite surprised by the power of this phorum, and the kindness of all users who monitor it. This is what makes Alpha so much more powerful than it already is.

    RE: Problem With Tabbed Object

    a5 is specifically designed to switch to the next tab page when you tab off the last object on the current tab page.

    the only way to circumvent this behaviour is to use xbasic

    you could define an OnKey event to check if the last key was a Tab AND that the current object is the last object on the current tab page. if this condition is true, then you can set focus to the first object on the tab page. e.g.

    object1.activate()

      RE: Problem With Tabbed Object

      Randy,

      Another approach:

      1) add a new variable to your form layout;
      2) use drag/drop to put a field object on tab1 for the new variable.
      3) specify the new field as last in tab order on tab page 1
      4) in OnArrive event for the new field object, insert a short script that sets focus to the first field in tab order on tab page 1

      The effect of this s/b that when the user tabs through the last 'real' field focus moves to the new field object, but then jumps to the first 'real' field on your form.

      Once this is working, put the icing on the cake by making the new field object 'hidden'.

        RE: Problem With Tabbed Object

        Tom,

        This works really well. The only problem is that if you hide the field object then it can not get focus so the on arrive never fires. I don't know what to do about that.

        One other possibility is to make a very small button and do the same thing. I will put the button right next to the real first field on tab1 this way if the user does happen to click it the focus ends up pretty close the where he clicked. (If I put it right next to it the user will just think he clicked that first field and that is why it got focus).

        What do you think?

        Thanks for the help,
        Randy

          Randy, that surprises me. My memory must be playing tricks on me. You haven't disabled it by mistake?

          Anyway, how about changing the field's color so that it matches the color of the tab object and therefore becomes invisible?
