Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5 DBF to A4 DBF?

I am curious if anyone has found a way to transfer Alpha 5 (v.5) data to a format Alpha 4 (v7) can read? Evidently the DBF formats have some suttle differences that makes direct transfer unworkable from A5 to A4. (A4 will not read an A5 table). Going from A4 to A5 is of course not a problem.

I know it can be done exporting to an Excel or other format from A5, then importing with A4, but formating is not the same as the original A5 DBF - and memo fields are a whole different story.

This ability would be helpful during transitioning from A4 to A5.

RE: A5 DBF to A4 DBF?

    Kirk,

In my latest 'adventure' going from A4V6 to A5V5, I found that there can be some problems if there are any calculated fields set up in A5. I had to set all the fields as 'User Entery', pull the data in and reset to calculations. You might have that same problem going from A5 to A4.

Since there is no difference in the .dbf files, the only thing that can cause something outside the actual data. Calculations have been, for me at least, the biggest problem. Second most common problem has to do with memo fields.

RE: A5 DBF to A4 DBF?

      Dave -

Thanks for the tip. The memo field turned out to be the culprit. When I deleted it from the Copy operation in A5, A4 read the data just fine. A5 must store memo fields differently than A4 - I didn't see any DBT files in my A5 data folder.

Now, all I need to do is figure out how to transfer the memo field without converting it to a character field and risk truncating data.

      Thanks again.

RE: A5 DBF to A4 DBF?

        Kirk,

In A5, the memo files are xxx.fpt, NOT xxx.dbt as in A4.

Do this: Copy the A4 files (.dbf & .dbt) into the folder your new A5 resides/will reside in. Open A5 and import using the genie.

Do you know how to transfer the memo files the other way? (A5 to A4) Thanks.

            Kirk,

Anything I would say on going that direction would be classed as either an outright lie or a pure guess. I'd suggest contacting Selwyn and see if he has any idea. It could be anywhere from easy to impossible, I just don't know. Sorry.

                Selwyn;
Did this (miracle)function come from some secret cache you have been holding out from us? As someone who is struggling with A5 and must keep using A4 daily, this little function could be a lifesaver!

                Thanks,

Will this be inserted into the documentation and help file at some point in the future?
