Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Sets

I have a table which contains contact infromation including an email address field. I have another table which includes an email address field. I am trying to create a set which displays the records from the first table (Parent) provided the email address is not included in the second table (Child). I then set the 'Include record from parent table:' field to 'Only if a matching child record does NOT exist' and save the new set. If I then try and open the set in design or runtime view, it hangs the database. Any suggestions?

    Ewan,

Don't know why this is happening for you, but I have an alternative idea that might help.

Try creating an inverted set. In the new set make the original child table primary. Link the originaly parent table as child using a 1:1 link.

Query the set to show only primary table records that have blank email fields and you should be good to go.

      Ewan,

On re-reading your message I've begun to think I might have misunderstood you. Please clarify what you mean by '...the email address is not included in the second table (Child)."

Are you looking for child table records that have blank email address fields ? Are you looking for child table records whose email address fields no longer match the email address field in the primary table ? Both ?

In either or both cases the inverted set might still be a very handy way to arrange the tables. Using an inverted set you could step through the records and mark those which don't have matching email address fields, for example.

Consider having one place for your clients email address as you seem to have redundant or duplicated data.

          RE: Sets

          Hi Tom,

What I want is if a record in the parent form has the same email address as a record in the child form, it should not be displayed. ie if the two email fields match, the record should not be displayed in the set.

The database is being built round tables used in a netmailer application and the child table records are people who have requested they be excluded from any further emails. Netmailer takes care of the actual exclusion as far as the send is concerned but the form requires to show only persons who will be emailed.

          Hope this clears it up.

            Tom,

got the reply wrong, what I should have said is

What I want is if a record in the parent TABLE has the same email address as a record in the child TABLE, it should not be displayed. ie if the two email fields match, the record should not be displayed in the set.

              RE: Sets

Ewan, if the current linkage is 1:N I again recommend you use a new set, inverting the original sequence for the tables and making the link 1:1.
