Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Child Table Filter

    I have a form is built on a set. Go to the form's properties and select the Fliter/Order tab. Select the child table and then enter the expression for the filter. In this case it was Year="2003".

    Run the form and the filter has absolutely no effect. So, I created a query in the operations tab based on the same set. Selected the child table, the Year field and 2003 for the expression. Ran the query, works great.

    Next, I placed the query on the form's OnInit event. No go. I placed a button on the from to run the query. Again, no go. Tried database compact, nada. I also put the filter on a form based on the child table. Works fine.

    My sense is that a filter or query applied to a form which is based on a set is supposed to. YES / NO?

    Thanks,

    RE: Child Table Filter

    Hi Kenn,

    I wonder if this problem is related to the one I have had with display order of child records in an embedded browse (see message thread beginning with #31505). If so, perhaps both will be fixed in the patch Selwyn has promised.

      Hi Ken:

      It should definitely work. Since there is currently a problem ordering records via Form Properties, I used a short query to accomplish the same goal. I placed the script in the forms OnActivate Event to order child records by {Date_Trans}, it works like a charm. I could have just as easily created a filter with the aforementioned ordering of child records. You probably dont need Query.Options = M, but I used it in another query, so I left it intact.

      Please note, although the script is in the form's OnActivate Event, it uses XBasic table methods, as opposed to form methods, only because that's my preference. Both should work equally well.

      Dim T as P
      Dim Qry as P

      T = table.current(2) 'child table is tblTransactions

      Query.order = "cdate(DATE_Trans)"
      Query.filter = ""
      Query.Options = "M"
      Qry = T.query_create()

      parentform.resynch()
      END

        the next patch has a fix for setting the order on an embedded browse for a set with a one to many link.

        you can download an interim fix at

          RE: Child Table Filter

          I downloaded the patch and the order on a form (parent Table) is working. However, I'm still having a problem with the sort order on a query.

          The query is filtered by one field from the child table and the order is set to the parent table fields of Lastname+Firstname+MI. If I run the query from the Operations tab, it sorts fine.

          Next I opened the form which has the Lastname+Firstname+MI sort order on the form's properties and opens with the records properly sorted. However, when I run the query with a button on that form (built on the 2 tables) it will not sort.

          If need be, I can send/post a snippet but that will have to wait until tomorrow.

          Thanks,

            Sherrill - Robert,

            I solved my problem of the filter by basing the form on a reversed set. Now my only problem is sorting the records in alphabetical order (see post below)

            Thanks for your suggestions.

              OK, I've been able to solve the problem: why the sort order on the query won't work.

              1. Button on the form to run a query with the sort order of lastname+firstname+mi.

              2. The same sort order is on the form so the browse is sorted.

              The form cannot have a sort order as the sort order on the form and the sort order on the query cancel each other out.

              Hope this makes sense.
