Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Every second page blank in report

Every second page on my report is bkank. I have checked the printer/page settings and the report page/setings without success.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated

    Thanks - Michael Mee

RE: Every second page blank in report

    Michael,

This is often the result of a mismatch between the printable area your printer can support, and the dimensions of the report layout you are sending to that printer.

Most modern printers have 'unprintable zones' along the margins of each sheet. Often these are 0.5 inches wide, on all four edges of the sheet. So, on a letter sized sheet, the actual 'printable' zone is not 8.5 inches by 11 inches it's only 7.5 inches by 10 inches.

If your printable zone is the same, any portion of your layout that extends wider or taller than this will spill over to the next page. If there are no fields or text in this 'non-printable' region of your layout you wind up with a blank sheet.

So, long story short. Reduce the dimensions of your report layout to fit entirely within the printable region your printer supports.

      Tom,

I too have played around with this for hours and can't seem to get it to work at times. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't.

The problem comes about because A5 doesn't give you an easy way to make the calculations. I have one letter I've never been able to fix. When I've had this problem, I check the letter properties for space at the top and bottom. I then have to calculate and add to that the space used in the letterhead region, then the space used in the body region and the space used in the footer region.

It would be better if A5 showed the user the overflow, similarly to Excel, where based on your settings, a dotted line comes up and shows you where you're off or out of bounds. Then you could add a hard page eject or adjust the size of a line or whatever, to get it to work.

In the letter I'm talking about, even if you preview it, it looks fine, but the blank page comes out just the same.

Do you have a calculation for this, do you do it by trial and error or is there something I'm missing here?

      Thanks,

      Charlie

        Charlie,

For me it's been trial and error. Sorry.

Recently I ran across another case where this kind of thing can happen. The report design included a single group break. The properties of the group break were set to both

        a) keep entire group on one page; and
        b) begin each group on new page.

A single blank sheet was ejected every other page.

We found that if we unchecked 'keep entire group on one page' the problem went away.

Might this apply to you, also ?

          Tom,

Good point, but the answer is I don't know.

I'm highlighting this point more for Selwyn and the team in the hopes that this might be addressed in the future. Now that the database features are world class and top notch, maybe it's time to address the output end of things. After all, what good is great data if you can't present it properly?

Most of the time I am exporting to Word and printing from there, but again, the reason I jumped in on this thread was to highlight the issue.

Charlie, with only the info in this thread it's unlikely they can do anything. A working example that illustrates the problem would be needed.

I thought you had a report that was misbehaving? If so, maybe you could check it to see what properties have been set for the group break region ?
