Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • A5 Product Feedback

    I would like any feedback, positive or negative, on the following Alpha 5 products from a "hands on" point of view.

    * Alpha 5 Home Version
    (How cutdown is this product and is it really simple to
    to develop databases?)

    * Add-on Template
    (Is adding on the accounting template as easy as 1-2-3?
    What should I know before recommending it to my boss?)

    Thank you.

    RE: A5 Product Feedback

    Hi Peter,

    How one product is compared to the other depends on your needs.

    Home Edition...How cutback? Not much. It's my understnding that it's only missing the Xdialog and the action script related to Xdailog. Alpha is easy to use. Like anything else, there is a learning curve. Some have found it steep and others not. It depends a lot on your approach. If you've used other products, you need to start is if you've had no experience. While some things are similar, you need to determine you will do it Alpha's way and not the other way.

    Accounting Package... I haven't used it but I've not seen anything that's a major issue on this message board.

    Others may have input as well.

    TYVM :) kenn

      Actually Ken (and Peter), the Home Edition does include Xdialog, it's just the Xdilaog Genie (in Action Scripting) that has been removed. If you'd still like to use Xdialog you can. You'll just need to code it by hand.

          RE: A5 Product Feedback

          One of the big problems of evaluating the difficulty level of any product is that it is impossible to assess the competency level of the user. A product might be very easy to understand for one level of user knowledge and be a total fog to another.

          While I have not used the accounting template, it appears fairly simple and a great place to start an accounting package. Notice, I say start. It is just a template. A fairly complete template. It probably can be used without any real changes, but you will probably want to make changes to fit your specific needs. The question isn't how easy the template is to use, but how comfortable are you with Alpha 5 to make small changes?

          Alpha 5 is very easy to use and learn, but like any product, it does take a little experience to get the most out of it.
