Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    query

I need to make multiple queries and print a report after each. I can make the queries, but sometimes have to close the program and reopen for them to run. Others run ok. The queries are basically the same. Any tips for avoiding having to exit the program? Thanks

    RE: query

Go back and check you queries. You've got something that's not quite right.

Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

      Carolyn,

I regularly run scripts that do query, print, query, print, query print without incident.

How are you defining the queries ?

What symptoms or behaviors do you see that cause you to shut Alpha Down ?

        RE: query

You may want to read this message about named queries.

        http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/alphaphorum/read.php3?sortby=lastreply&direction=desc&num=11&id=25349&thread=25090

If the number of queries is large, and they are created by a named operation, this could explain the problem. Also verify they you have the settings configured to drop queries on program close. The fact that closing and reopening "fixes" the problem suggests that the queries are already being dropped, which is preferred.

          RE: query

the queries are (Cd_Date>{03/31/2003}).AND.(Cd_Fwdset="BDC") for the expresion, the order is Cd_Fwdset+Cd_Date+Cd_Ourno. All of the queries run before I shut Alpha, but none of them print a report until after I close Alpha and reopen. The query will run, I see the correct data, but the report will not show any records until I close and reopen. I am saving these as named queries, but the name doesn't show in operations until I close/reopen.

The queries all work. The report doesn't print. Don't be so quick to assume it's my problem.

              RE: query

The o symptoms I see are that the queries only run from the expression building window. If I go to operations the querry isn't listed. If I try to print a report it shows all records or no records. If I go to operations the query isn't shown. At least the run correctly after I close and reopen. I first tried because I ran one from the window and then it seemed to disappear. So I just thought maybe reopening would free up the program. I had problems with version 4 if I built more than 5 or 6 at the time. I is set to drop querries when I shut down. If I add memory can I do more, you think? I have xp with 256

"I am saving these as named queries, but the name doesn't show in operations until I close/reopen"

This is due to a change made some time ago on how the control panel refreshes to lower system demands. Click on the "refesh" icon on the toolbar, and the operation name will display.

Perhaps if you zip the database and tables with some sample code and post it, someone can get a better handle on the sequence of events and see where the problem is. The query filter and order seem ok, so the problem may be in the sequence of events or the report definition.
