Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    YeSQL, Again.

I know I'm probably beating a dead horse here, but does anyone have a method of successfully working via Attach SQL?

I've got a Timekeeping app that I want to hook into an Access mdb file to grab timeclock data. I'm able to attach and view the records, but any attempt to do anything w/ the records fails.

I've tried appending to an existing dbf, copying, as well as exporting the recs to a txt file for re-import. Nothing works. On the copies and exports I do get a message saying "32 records..." but no file/records gets created.

Short of some nasty DDE thing to open the mdb w/ access and export automatically, is there anything else I should try?

One idea is that you can change the Access mdb file to use linked foxpro 2.6 tables that are native to A5v5. In Access export the files to Foxpro format then in Access link to those tables :-)

If you're coming to the conference, Selwyn will be talking about v6 which will work as a front end to sql data. This might solve your problem.

Alas, I am out at one of my client's jobsites in balmy Nort Pole, Alaska. Will not be making the conference.

Re Foxpro db type. I'm not seeing that as an export option in Access 2000. (at least under the macro command TransferDatabase).

No matter. What I ended up with is an Access mdb that opens, saves the tables as csv text files, then closes.

So in A5, I'll just run the mdb, then import the text files. Kinda screwy, but it works.

You can but you will need to use the ODBC driver to export your files to FoxPro format. Alternately you could export and link to dbase IV format and read those directly in A5v5.

Here is a sample mdb (Access 2000) file linked to a FoxPro table. You will need to change the embedded linking information by doing the following:

            In Access 2000/2002

Open the Customer table in design mode
Press F4 to view the properties for the table
            Replace the string:
            ODBC;DSN=Visual FoxPro Tables;SourceDB=c:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT OFFICE XP\OFFICE10\SAMPLES;SourceType=DBF;Exclusive=No;BackgroundFetch=Yes;Collate=Machine;Null=Yes;Deleted=Yes;;TABLE=customer

with the path of where you placed the customer.dbf file.
            Save the table design.

You need to be careful when exporting your Access table to FoxPro table format. The first eight characters of any field cannot be the same or a JET error will result.

This works fine for me and you can continue to use both Alpha and Access.
