Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Help on Error Message

I have a form based on a set of tables that includes some embedded browses on a tab control on the form. I made some appearance changes and format changes then saved and closed out. When I attempted to open the form back up in view mode I recieved the following error message:

"Warning: Cannot load specified form "Union_Data". Using a default form instead."

Then I tried to open the form in design mode and this is the error message I recieved:

    "internal error: StoreOpen"

I have never seen this error message before. Does anyone have a clue as to what might have happened or what this error message means? I am at a lost. I hope that it doesn't mean that I have lost the form I just spent many hours on creating and formatting. Any help would be great! Thanks in advance.

    RE: Help on Error Message

    hi jerry:

try closing a5v5 and re-booting. then run scandisk. then re-boot and run a database compact. if you have a5v4 loaded on the same machine to run old apps ensure that you re-boot if you have run a5v4 and the want to run a5v5 or visa versa. also make sure that you have the latest build if you are running win-98 or win-me.

    good luck!

    regards,

    ed

Thanks Ed. I tried and no go! Any ideas what those messages mean? Looks like I lost about 60hrs worth.
It might be time to go back to SQL and Access.

Jerry, the layout for your form is stored in the data dictionaries for the set upon which it is based. You can roll back to an earlier version of the layout by copying your backup dictionary files for the set into the database folder. Since this will wipe out all changes pertinent to any layout based on the set that are more recent than your backup it's a step of last resort in many cases. (Layouts include report designs, label designs, custom browse designs, and letter designs.)

I wish I could, but I've been developing on my local hard drive and havent backed up yet. I usually just move the new foms once they have been tested to the server.
          Thanks anyway!
Do you know what the error message is? Or means?

            RE: Help on Error Message

All that it means really is that your table dictionary is corrupted.

A default form is what will load whenever Alpha 5 cannot load a specified form. Even though you can see it there, Alpha 5 can't load it, so it does the next best thing for you, loads the default.

You might try a few things before starting over:

            1. If your form is built on a set, one of your relationships may be causing a violation of some kind. So try deleting the child relationships, and recreating them. Delete them, then save and exit. Compact database, then go back in and add it.
            2. If you have any validations on any of your field rules, one of the records in one of your tables might not be validated, this can happen especially if you are posting in or appending data. Try zapping your table if you don't need the data.
            3. Try going in to define indexes, and see if you have anything that looks like sssf454576. You can delete that and rebuild the indexes, and that might help.

But usually if it gets to the point where it gives you that error, you have to restore from a backup, which will be a slight problem. Don't you just hate it when that happens? ARGH!

              Jerry,

I hope you'll rethink your backup strategy. Interim backups even during development have saved my bacon more than once. It's not necessary to backup the entire hard drive, just create an archive copy of the database using your favorite zip utility and keep it in a different folder. I do this at the end of each development session, giving each zip file a name that ties to the date of the changes. Permits me to easily 'roll back' the database to an earlier version if the need should arise. Periodically I offload all the archive zip files to remote storage in case the hard drive crashes. Doing it this way I am guarding against self-inflicted errors if I manage to trash my database, and also mechanical errors if the hard drive fails.

Thanks Tom, we have already instituted for some time now a weekly system backup to tape and a A5 back-up to seperate drive. I just started backing up my development to the server as well. Can't handle losing that much work! It appears that it was lost and I'm not going thru that again!
I've tried everyone's suggestion and it appears that something just went "computer funky" like it can sometimes.
                Thanks for all the help!
