Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Best way to set up application

    To all:
I have a tool room application running in an office enviroment.
    version 5 on a windows 2000 server.
10 office computers all running runtime.
Server connected to 100 mb switch
    All is well.

    Problem:
    5 remote machines running runtime.
connect by cable modem or dial up to internet and use VPN to connect to office network.

Remote computers are all windows 2000 P4 1GH or better.
Remote computers load application very slow.
6 minutes to load 1st sign in screen and 30 seconds to change screens.

Any ideas on how to speed up remote computers.

      Hi Charlie,

You may just be at the mercy of your local Internet bandwidth load. I run a VPN over DSL into a T3 network and still at peak load times transfer can be much slower than expected. If some of your users are on dial-up connections I would think that may be the culprit. Any time you use a VPN you are basically dependant on the slowest link in the chain.

        Marc:
Even with my cable modem and 512 speed it still takes 6 minutes to load the initial sign in screen.

I was hoping that it may be a setup problem.

That does sound extreme. I find that when other server load factors such as queries and reports or even heavy email usage (by other local users) are in progress that Server performance via VPN is very poor.

The only things in A5 I'm aware of to check for :

Are the installs on the slow machines properly Network Optimized?

Is referrential integrity causing any problems?

Are all the large constant files (splash and background images) installed locally on each machine?

Is there an overly burdensome login script that is referrencing a huge file or creating massive user access tracking records?

You might try creating a very basic test data base and deploy it to a couple of the slowest machines just to verify whether the connection or the data base architecture may may be at fault.

          Hope that helps

          Good Luck

RE: Best way to set up application

            Charlie,

Until a true client-server version of Alpha 5 (Version 6), it is not possible to run Alpha 5 or Alpha 4 (and for that matter, any other non client-server database Access, Filemaker and the like) remotely over a Wide Area Network (WAN) or internet. The slowness you see has to do with Record Locking issues. The only solution is to operate remotely using PCAnywhere, WebEx, Citrix Server or Remote Terminal Services built into Win XP Pro (which is a limited version of Citrix Server).

These all effectively run the application on the LAN and just display the results remotely and allow for remote keyboard and mouse.

VPN (virtual privat network) is a server side admin controlled file share - in effect you are connecting remotely as a local user. So you are operating on the LAN.

RE: Best way to set up application

                Marc,

The communications through a VPN are effectively a private channel through the internet, however it does not mean the application is running locally. It makes the LAN look local to the remote machine, but the record locking speed is constrained by the internet delay (which is even more with VPN due to encryption algorithms). Internet delay for a record lock might be 2 seconds compared to 10 milliseconds over a LAN (not actual numbers, but in the ballpark estimates). Only by moving the record locking to the actual high speed LAN, can it operate with a reasonable speed.

                Regards,

                Ira

I agree, record locking and encription issues would apply but probably would not explain a 6 minute lag time for the splash screen over a cable modem. Unless the access bandwidth is extremely poor.

I suspect there is some other scripting or architectural handshake that is contributing to the problem.

This may be a really dumb statement, but ...

Do you have Network Optimization in effect?

                      For what it's worth:

It sounds to me like the remote users are trying to connect directly into your lan. Any chance you could set up another another computer(s) on the lan so they could run it remotely?

I connect on a regular basis to a customer via a VPN connection and use Remote Administrator Viewer to run one of his computers. My connection is via cable and his is a 128 DSL. That is probably the fastest remote connection I've seen other than when I connected to another single user system who also has a cable connection.
