Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    What happened to RANGES?

Remember the old days of Alpha4. You could creat a range (Filter) of records in a database. I need to do that now and cant figure out how. What I have is an inventory table with the inventory items of 2 differnt locations combined into one table. Both locations have both same and differnt items. Hoiw can I build a filter or range so that the end user sees only the records of one or the other and not both?

    RE: What happened to RANGES?

The Range is still there, it's just set up a bit diffenerntly and no called a Range. When you define the filter, use the Genie. Look at the options for the fields you want to use. When needed, variables will automatically be created.

Let us know if you need more help.

Actually, ranges are still available in xbasic. They are rarely used and usually replaced by queries. The only advantage to a range is that it will return a sub-set of an existing index and is therefore dynamic. In effect, it is essentially the same as a filtered index that can be created and cleared with xbasic. A query is static and doesn't show changes until it is refreshed.

Ranges are covered in the xbasic manual under tbl.range_add() and tbl.range_drop()

        RE: What happened to RANGES?

Ranges were still available manually in browses and through Xbasic. Because the Range looks into the existing index listings to request its records the computer doesn't read and sort through all the records like it does when it creates a Query. This can be an advantage if the user is sitting across a network from a large table since the Range only reads a tiny portion of the records and causes less work for the computer network.

Ranges are less flexible than Queries but can be very handy in large or networked reports where performance is important.

To run a report with a range you have to eliminate any of the embedded or preassigned query functions and tell Alpha to run the report with no query or filtering. It's a bit tedious but you can collect the users range specification with Xbasic, start the report and assign the Range values in Xbasic just after the report starts to run.

          RE: What happened to RANGES?

          Jerry - David,

Thanks for your comments. I agree that a range is still available via xbasic. I did not mean to imply that the Genie was the ONLY place a range could be created. However, in the context of Fred's question, I believe he was referring to what took the place of the Range as used in Alpha 4.

Many users of A5v4 are very familiar with using xbasic to create a range. However, many new users will not, if ever, use xbasic directly to create or clear a Range. They need to know how to use the Genie to create a range via a filter or a query. The range, along with other Alpha tasks, has taken on a new look and combined with other Alpha features.
