Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Import Text file

When I try to import a text file using File import, or using a new operation and selecting import I get a message stating that a file C:progra.dbf can not be found. Can anyone advise me.

    Arthur,

DBF files can usually be APPENDED. Doubt that they can be IMPORTED. Imports are reserved for non-DBF files I believe.

If this doesn't get you going, post more details.

      RE: Import Text file

Thanks Tom. I'm trying to create an application for my company as part of the annual stocktaking. I'm trying to import a .Txt file with the stock details. I think it's the Import Genie that's missing.
I can obviously import the .txt file into Excel then save as Dbf but I'm trying to create something for a user who may not be capable of doing it that way. A txt file is created from another application, standard fixed length. I want them to be able to create a table from this by clicking a button.

        Arthur,

Sorry. I interpreted the error message you described as Alpha being unable to find your source file for the import, presuming that you were mistakenly trying to import a DBF.

          Arthur:

If the dbf does not exist make sure you are importing into a new dbf.

          I hope this helps.

This has been talked about before on the list.

Make the new database (or if you already have it, open it.)

Then create a shorcut to the database using the menu options from Alpha 5.

With the control panel open, click Tools - Create Shortcut and follow the wizard to make a chortcut for your desktop.

When you open the database from that shortcut, your import with function properly.

              RE: Import Text file

Thanks guys for your responses. I am unable to use the File Import genie for a Text file. Even if I go to the operations tab and try to import a text file if fails immediately. If I use File, Import the message appears immediately. I'm not given any choices to select what I want to import etc. It's as if something is missing. Is there an addin for importing text files that's missing. The A5 message box that appears says "The system cannot find the file specified C:\progr.dbf". I would be importing a .txt file without a database already existing.

I'm now eating humble pie. I've just realised my problem. I'm working on a PC that's not mine in another part of the country/company and I've accidently gone into the application using an old shortcut taking me into A5V4 hence the problems. Sorry for wasting everyones time.

                  RE: Import Text file

this bug only happens if you start a5 by double clicking on an .adbf file.

if you start a5 by clicking on a shortcut (created by the shortcut genie under the tools menu, or from the start/program files menu) then it does not happen.
