Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Limit on number of operations?

I have a database that requires many defined operations. Today, I set up a posting operation and saved it. When I went to the operations window it wasn't there. I had run the posting from the design window and it worked properly. I then tried to attach that operation to a button on a form but the name I saved did not show in the selection list for postings. I then went back and redid the posting design and used "Save As". The drop down window showed all the other names I had tried to use to save it and asked if I wanted to overwrite the one I selected. I opted YES but when I went to the operations tab, the window showed the other 29 operations I had previously set up,but not this one. Is there a limit on the number of operations the program will save? Apparently it saves all the names but not the actual operation???

    Howard,

you can change the 'view' of the control panel tab page.

Have you tried setting it to details, instead of large or small icons?

    Open control panel,
Right click on blank space in the control panel,
    Choose View,
    Choose List or Details.

    Does that help?

After you save the operation, be sure to refresh the controlpanel.

RE: Limit on number of operations?

Tom, thanks for responding...but....no, that doesn't help. There is plenty of room on the "Operations" window. I changed view to small icons and "wrote" the operation again. There were four names showing in the window when I selected "save", so I selected one that was already there. Program asked me if I wanted to overwrite it, I responded "YES". When I returned to the Operations tab window it was not there (small icons this time). I had no problems with the previous 29 and each time I returned to the tab window, the name I just saved was there. This has me baffled.

Jerry, I have gone so far as to quit the program entirely and reload it. The operation is still not there. I have never had to refresh the control panel for the other 29 operations that are listed. Thanks for taking the time to respond to my cry for help.....

By the way, this happens on either of my computers running A5V5, so I assume that the problem is limited to my application or A5 itself.

The specifications I can locate indicate the number of operations is only limited by the file size and is essentailly unlimited. It is possible that the data dictionary for the table has become corrupted. I assume you have tried to compact the database to see if that helps. Another possibility would be to duplicate the table, selecting to include all options, and test the duplicated table.

                Howard,

Your problem sounds strikingly similar to one I was having for quite a while, and Jerry has probably hit the nail on the head. In my case it was indeed a corrupted dictionary file ...

Jerry, compacting was no help. I am not sure what you meant by the second part of your message. There are two tables involved in the posting operation. How would I go about doing what you suggested?
I am going to try going back to an earlier version of the application and see if I have the same problem.
                  Thanks

Jerry, you are a genius! I duplicated both tables (master and transaction) and re-entered the posting operation. When I saved it and went back to the "Operations" window, lo and behold I found ALL of the previous operations that I had named for this particular posting. I don't understand any of this but as long as it works I am happy.
                    Many thanks....

If the duplicated table worked and the origianl didn't, then the original had a corrupted data dictionary. When you duplicate the table, you create a new data dictionary. Normally compact will fix any problems, but there seem to be some corruptions that only a rebuild will fix. This again shows the need for regular compacting of the database when designing.

Jerry, I deleted the "bad" tables and renamed the duplicates so I wouldn't have to make any other changes to scripts, etc. It seems to be working OK now but Murphy's law prevails and after I got it working I had a power "glitch" and my UPS battery was bad so I had a power crash. When I got back up everything seems to be working but then, I have not tested "everything" yet. It will probably bite me next week! (PS: UPS has new battery now)
                        Thanks again
