Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    My 1st Application

    Hi All,

O boy they say once you learn how to ride a bike you never
Forget I am sorry I disagree. I am trying to get back into
This stuff I use to use alpha DOS and was very good at it
So you no how long it has been.

Ok to my problem I need to make an application the simple
Ver. of the Application is I need a Automobile set that
Is a lookup only for now- year, make, and model.

Should I make 3 sepret tables for this I seem to think so
Because of the simple rule of database neutralizing no
Redundant data but then again I am going to have redundant
Models because their is a ford escort for 1990, 1991, 1992
    And so on.

This is probly so simple the answer is probly staring me in the face. Please keep in mind when you give me advice
That this application needs to link up later on to a set
That when doing data entry the first field to lookup will
Be the year then the make then the model.

The application is going to be much moor complicated then
    This later on

    Thank you
    Ray

    Ray,

Create a table with the make, model, year, etc. and use that as a lookup for a field in your first table.

Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

      Ray,
Perhaps in the lookup table that Ken suggested you could use Make, Model, Startyear and Endyear. Something on the lines of:
      Make Model Startyear Endyear
      Chevrolet Camaro 1967 2003

This would give you 1 entry for Chevrolet Camaro, as opposed to 3o+.

        RE: My 1st Application

        Hi Ken, Alan

Thank you for the grate advice however innless I am missing
Something a specific year lets say 2003. I have no problem
Using start-year end-year that is a grate idea but how
Would I pull the year's in-between maybe some sort of quarry?
That says IF 1999 then pull start date 1990 and end date
2000 how would I make this statement if this is what I should do or do you have any other suggestions

        Ray

PS please be patient with me I will catch on

          RE: My 1st Application

          Ray,
I'm not completely sure what the database for you application is for. I was thinking on the lines of maybe a catalog where either parts or something else would be specific for a certain year model. Case in point, Chevrolet has had 4 different body styles for the Camaro, or at least 4 that I can think of. 1967-1969, 1970-1981, 1982-199?, 199?-200?(I'm not sure of the years on the last 2 body styles). Some parts are interchangable, but alot are not. By putting a startdate of 1967, you colud keep someone from entering or looking for a 1966.

Searching for 1990 with a startdate of 1980 and enddate of 2000, would be a query for startdate> or equal to 1990 and enddate

            Hi Alan

Thank you for the reply. So would I have to make a record
For each date and model or would their be a way to still
Enter a rage of dates like what was stated above.

                Ray,

By the time you furnish sufficient detailed information to tell us what it is you need to build, you could build it yourself.

Here's my suggestion. Don't wait to start until your design is perfect. Begin small. Build one table and one form. Play with Alpha Five to see how it works. You'll find amazing functionality is available to you automatically. Then add new functionality (more tables, more forms) one at a time.

I think you're better off spending time building a simple contacts database, with a People table, a Phones table, a Hobbies table and perfecting it until you understand better how Alpha Five works. Then tackle your 'real' project.

                  Hi Tom

Thanks for the reply. This is a frustrating answer and slow to say the least but your right I will take it a step
At a time I just dont no if I need to enter a new record for every model year but I will play after all that is how I learned Alpha DOS and I turned out to be a very creative dev but I have been out of it that long.

                    Hello, Ray.

Actually, I disagree with you. In my opinion it would be far slower for you if we discussed each piece of your design here, and then, if all you did was implement the suggestions you got here you probably wouldn't have learned as much. Don't let the 'learning curve' stop you. Take it one small step at a time. Alpha Five has many tools to help you, and this forum will be a great resource, too.
