Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Hiding Development Environment

    Is it possible to "hide" the development environment when presenting the user with an application? More specifically, is the A5v5 "parent" window always present, with the application being stuck in there? Is this something that goes away in the run-time?

    Hi Dennis

    End users of your application would only be using the runtime, unless they also buy the full program.

    You can always make the "Control Panel" hide from the user but you must make sure you create a secret way in.

      Hello Keith.

      Any tips on how to do this? Would it have to be done programatically via XBasic?

        Hi Dennis

        This can all be done with Action Scripting and would only take a few seconds to set up. So no Xbasic is needed to be learnt at this time. Having said that, after creating the Action Script you can view the Xbasic that Alpha has created to see how it is done.

          You can label the A5 parent window as something else.

          But it's always there. Even in runtime.

            RE: Hiding Development Environment

            Hello Dennis,

            There are several ways to hide the control panel. Of course make sure there is something to show the user if you do this. The quickest way to do this is when you are at the control panel of the database in question, select the File menu choice, then Database Properties.... The dialog that comes up will allow you to select a startup form, usually some type of menu/navigation form, and your can check 'Hide the Control Panel'.

            As was mentioned earlier, if you do this, make sure you give yourself a way in to the control panel. This could be a button that has the following in its action:

            controlpanel.show()
            controlpanel.activate()

            The activate is in case the control panel is hidden behind some other open form. It forces the controlpanel to the front.

            If you haven't disabled this, you can also hold down the control & shift key while a database loads. This will bring up a dialog that will allow you to skip the loading of a startup form and or an autoexec script.

            Put this in a new script and run it to see these commands work:

            controlpanel.hide()
            sleep(5)
            controlpanel.show()

            Good luck,
            Jim

              I don't think this guy is talking about the control panel. I think he's talking about the fact that your application always exists within A5's main window,

                RE: Hiding Development Environment

                When you create your application, create a main menu that takes up the windowspace. Next use the properties on the startup icon to add lines such as -noslpash and -maximize along with -Title"Your Program name" to hid every thing but your application.

                  RE: Hiding Development Environment

                  You can also pop up your forms as dialog forms and minimize alpha 5 all within the background. That will give you the illusion that Alpha5 is closed, but it can't be closed because your application won't run outside of Alpha 5.

                  Try instead of having a form load at startup of the application, write an autoexec script that opens up your main form (as a dialog), and then minimizes the application. When naming your script autoexec, it automatically runs on load of your application.

                  There is lots of help on this in the documentation for alpha 5.

                  Thanks,

                  Brandi

                    RE: Hiding Development Environment

                    This is correct. My apolgies to everyone...should have been more specific. I do want to hide the A5 main menu. Only reason I'm asking is that I may want my app to run full screen, or something.

                        Could Dennis be refering to the Alpha Toolbar and / or the Alpha Menu perhaps. If so, then of course, from the form in design mode right click and select properties - go to menus/toolbars - under menus, change the system menu to none, and /or under toolbars, change the system toolbar to none.

                        If I read it wrongly just ignore this.
