Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Unhandled Exception

I am sure the "Unhandled Exception" subject has been "beat to death". On the other hand it is suddenly happening to me on an application that it has not happened before. The difference, I am using a different form than before. So I am curious,

1- what have been the most typical causes of this occurrence?

2- is this more often than not a memory issue or is it a design issue?
    ================================
    My process/situation is as follows:

1- make design change to form
    2- save form
    3- run/test form
    4- return to design mode
5- forced shut down occurs before going back to design mode.
    6- version 1036
    7- Win98
    8- 128MB RAM

The differences between current and old form

1- new form is not a tabbed form
2- varied filters and actions for form are via hot spot/action script combo rather than buttons to action scripts
3- queries are custom rather than saved

Note that no field rules have changed nor any data administration, etc.

Hopefully I can get some insight from the typical problem before zipping/uploading a 3 MB application for review.

    RE: Unhandled Exception

    Hi Bob...

I used to have some troubles with unhandled exceptions.... the problem seems to have went away though. Is this happening on a specific form or is it with all forms?

      RE: Unhandled Exception

look thoroughly to see if there are any "unfinished processes" hanging around, or dialogs left open, etc.

one way I check is, in your situation, when I go back to design mode, go to the control panel, and do a compact - that will usually give you feedback if a file/form is open.

another cause, that comes to mind, is this: if your app opens to maybe "Main Menu", you click another form, and then go to design mode without closing ALL open forms, (the Main Menu,) occasionally I get a system crash. Although you will get away with leaving another form open most of the time, I recommend closing all forms before going to design.

In a few cases, I had to recreate the form when I got a crash!

As best I can tell only the new form, which alerts me that this is my doing rather than the system. The confusing part is that it only happens as I go back to design view from form view. When I "X" out via closing the form window it never happens.

          RE: Unhandled Exception

When I followed your suggestion of compact, because the form is open it gives me an unable to compact messaage because all the set tables are open because the form is tied to the set. It does not indicate other forms or files. I presume the table messages are proper since the form is open and accessing them.

I am not running from a main menu. I am using the form directly from A5 menus, etc. At this stage, I am the end user as well as the designer and have no need yet for a menu system.

No other forms open. I have restarted the computer and the same still happens even though I have not used any other forms associated with my application.

            RE: Unhandled Exception

Bob, as regards the suggested test, you would be in the control panel, thus all being correct, there are no open forms/files, and a message back when compacting would indicate something was open.

but if you are running from the control panel, anyway, then it would not be an issue.

Try rebuilding the form, by making a new one. Sometimes things get messed up.
