Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Default menu

I'd like a form to open automatically when I fire up Alpha5. Sorta like when I open up my web page with my browser and whola... there it is. I can't find any instruction to open up a menu without having to first go through all the folders. HELP. (I bet it's so simple)

With the control panel displayed, click on File/Database Properties/Startup and select the startup form.

      Ohlen...

Big time thanks. It was sooo easy. Now how can I perform a simple mathmatical expression. I've got a small insurance agency and in each client data file, I assign a premium in individual forms from January to December. Each month I need to know the total production (premiums collected) and also an ongoing total as the months go by. Yikes! The manuel is not so specific. Grats.

Glad to know you're making progress. In general, it's better to ask a new question in a new thread. Then more users will see the question under the new subject and respond. Also makes it easier to find a thread on a particular subject if you want to look it up later.

Regarding the expression: Do you want to show it on a form, a report or both?

Alpha has several ways to total fields. In the expressions manual look at tablesum, dbsum, total, runtotal (there's more of these than on this list.) The one used will depend on your needs and structure of your application.

Here's a suggestion. Create another table to hold the receipts. The new table would be linked 1 to many in a set to the client by the client number. As each entry is made, you would use the post field rule to post the payment to the client for a running total. You could use the table sum expression to total the collections by month and year on a report at the end of each month. I would record receipts by month/date/year so you can leave the main table/set intact and extract years and months for reporting.

If you haven't already done so, I'd suggest you get one of the books available from alpha that will help you learn programming. There's also a tutorial available for download (I'll try to find the link and send it along) and Susan Bush has made her new book available chapter by chapter for free with each issue of the Alpha Newsletter. Peter Wayne has an excellent book on programming in Alpha5. And of course, keep posting questions here. You'll find some of the nicest people on the WEB here at the Alphasoftware message board.
