Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Does anyone know how...

First, I understand why Alphasoftware time locks it's A5v5. Today I was writing date depandant database code for Access. To test the database, I set my clock back, then ahead one month. My problem is that I forgot to reset my clock before running A5 and upon execution, got the "register" dialog box even though I was only in day 3 of software evaluation.

I cannot use A5 now. Does anyone know how I can get my evaluation time frame reestablished {eg reset to 27 days of evaluation left?} I understand that a reset may be impossible, but thought I'd ask anyway. I really like what I see in A5 so far, and would like to run it through the paces of an honest evaluation.

If someone knows how to do this and would like to email me instead of posting a solution on the forum, you may email me at [email protected]

    Thanks-

    Ken:

Send a message to Richard at alphasoftware. they may have a quick answer.

I thought you could just reset the date and time back.

Why not delete A5 from your PC and then re-install it?

        Barry,

Thanks. I tried that yesterday but it did not work. I suspect that the software writes a key to the registry that the unstallation routine does not remove. I will look through the registry to try to find the key but I'm betting I will not find the key. I do not think that Alphasoft would put the subkey in an obvious place like HKLM or HKCU under the software/alpha Key. I suspect that I will have to write Richard at alphasoftware as Charlie suggested.

        Thanks again.

          Still trying...

I'm about to give up, though. Seeing this:

'DESCRIPTION:Sets highest date/time found when A5 is started

Has convinced me that the solution to fixing the problem can only be solved by finding which key in the registry is created when A5 is first run. I think that the exe reads this key (which is not deleted during the uninstall) so that the program "remembers" when it was first installed because it probably looks for this key everytime it starts. If it is not there, it creates it. If it is there and the time is greater than 30 days as rendered by your system clock, you are out of luck.

          {I could be way off, but I don't think so. This is the only way that Alphasoft can make sure someone just does not keep reinstalling the software without buying it.}

BOTTOM LINE: Don't move your clock up and forget to reset it to the correct date before running the A5 trial.

I s'pose I'll just buy it because I really like what I saw. Hell, it beats filepro hands down. Not too sure A5 beats Access yet, but heck, it's only money, right?

Use it for a while, it beats access.

              Ken,

This won't fix your problem, but it might help someone else. Back in the A4V6 days, I had a client who, when printing receipts, kept setting the click back so that her union members wouldn't have to pay delinquent dues penalty. Problem was that she kept forgetting to reset the clock (sound familiar?). What I did was create an option to set a 'temporary' date that reset to the correct date upon rebooting. On all the forms I added a blinking field that display 'Calculation date' as a reminder to her that the program was using a temporary date rather than the current date.

This worked like a charm - I never got a panic call again. You might want to keep this in mind for future reference.

                Good idea.

It occurs to me that I could probably find the key(s) that A5 writes to the registry by first taking a snapshot of my regisry before installing A5, installing the program on a clean machine, taking another snapshot, and finally running A5 for the first time, after which I can take another snapshot. By comparing the three snaphots I will be able to determine which keys were created, their initial values, and any changes between snapshot 1 & 3.

In any event, this forum is worth the price of the software; it reminds me of the Lotus Approach forum. Lots of smart friendly folks willing to help...
